It's been a while since I've been on the forum ... long enough that I forgot what my username and password were and I had to reset them! Anyway, back in May, Nathaniel requested a trip up to Mule Canyon and then lunch at the "Peanut Restaurant" in Calico (a.k.a. The Calico House Restaurant). So, I woke the boys up early on a Saturday and we were off. First stop, Mule Canyon. The little black Forester is my new off-roading vehicle. The 1993 Land Cruiser died last year due to transmission problems. I wasn't going to sink a few thousand dollars into a 20 year old vehicle so I sold her to CarMax. Very sad. The Forester has all the off-road ability we'll need - we've used it a few times already - and the Land Cruiser was, frankly, overkill. Fun. Just overkill. And with gas prices as they are I went from 12 mpg (with the wind behind the Land Cruiser) to 35 mpg in the Forester. Next, off to Calico for lunch. It was pushing 90 by the time we left for Calico so it was a good time to get out of the field. I'll eventually get around to posting pics of the stuff we picked up. Hope you enjoyed the photos. Paul Update: My Old Girl - R.I.P. UPDATE 09/24/2014 Well, while I got pics, I haven't had time to cut any of these. I did window a couple using the grinding wheel and they look good but I'll have to slab them to be sure. Anyway, here's the pile: And a few close ups: (that looked like a side of beef... Thanks Paul

Great report Paul but there is one problem. You gotta make those boys quit growing because they are making me, and you, look older way too fast. The change is amazing since your previous posts. The younger looks bigger than the older was when you were posting before. Since you have been gone for a while I am going to have to do a little bragging that you probably missed. Hey, Jim. Good to see you again! Andrew is almost as tall as his mom and Nathaniel isn't far behind him. Nathaniel is pushing 85lbs and is only 8 yrs old. Andrew is 12 and is only 100 lbs! Additionally, they're both eating more than me now, which gets expensive when we go out to eat.
They are getting bigger and older. As we are, my friend!
CONGRATULATIONs on your Great Grandson. That is awesome!!!

We had a stick shift Forester for many years. We went through some really wild areas with it. Ground clearance is just a little low but it sure ate up soft sand. Our first trip out we were looking for a rock area following a map that wasn't very good. Road turned into a sandy wash. I stopped to ask someone directions and he looked at my Forester and shook his head. I was the only one back there not on a quad or the one tricked out jeep we saw. Ours was a 2001 and averaged 27 mpg. Good to see you back.

15 minutes from my house. Just above beautiful downtown Yermo. Mule Canyon was named for the 20 mule team wagons that brought the borax ore from the mine up there. It is a very scenic drive through the canyon. Much quicker by car than mule train. The wagons took a whole day to make it down from the mine, overnighted at bottom and then drove on to Daggett the next day.

Thanks guys. That area is a lot of fun. So much area to explore. And to John's point Yermo's really a happening place. :-) On one trip we found a hill covered in crystalline gypsum. Or, a pretty form of drywall LOL.
