Great pics and story.
Why was fire such a big danger. Imagine there were a lot less trees back in the hey day. Just a bunch of marble laying around. Forgive my ignorance...

From all that I've read on the web, this was all built by aliens 20,000 years ago.
No, really great report well done! Thank you!

Great pics and story. Why was fire such a big danger. Imagine there were a lot less trees back in the hey day. Just a bunch of marble laying around. Forgive my ignorance... Good question. I'm guessing that most of the cutting was done dry and the fires resulted from sparks. There ahere pictures at the mill site showing the aftermath of one inferno. They also built a 60' wall to protect the building from avalanches. The mill was almost 1400' long, shut down in 1941 and was dismantled. There's a lot of good information at link.

Great report. I've been to Creede and Silverton many times but just heard about Marble at Denver Show. I was told all the headstones at Arlington are from there.

We went over there 9 0r 10 years ago. Fascinating place, great report. If I am remembering correctly, the Tomb of the Unknowns is made of that material as well.
