These are a few of the cabs I worked over the weekend. The first two are little pieces of boulder opal.
Boulder Opal 1 - this one has a little flash in it, but there is a small fracture where the opal meets the iron stone. It has a better shine than the photo shows. It wasn't until I took the pictures that I realized I had a fingerprint smudge on it lol.
Boulder Opal 2 - Mostly iron stone, but there is a tiny bit of opal matrix on the tip and even a spot of bright blue flash. This one took an almost mirror polish. The spots near the top are dust.
Next two are Louisiana Opal. I found 16 slabs, some has nice opal flash, others like these two do not.
Louisianna Opal 1
Louisianna Opal 2
These are "unknown". Maybe a variety of Chrysocolla, maybe a Gem Silica in copper. I posted one of them previously, but took it back to the wheels for a little reshaping. They are not "pretty" per se, but they are unusual. Best polish I get with them was matte =\
Unknown 1
Unknown 2
Dinosaur Bone - not the best bone in the world, but I really love working with it
Horse Canyon Agate(?) - this is a tentative ID. It is a neat stone, but the colors are a bit muted. I polished the heck out of it but it only took a semi-gloss/matte finish =\
These last three are my favorites.
Wild Horse Picture Jasper - The black spot in the center is what I liked with this one. To me, it looks like a dark moon rising over a mesa.
Crinoid Fossil - This is from some rough I got from Brain - beefjello . It is a large cab and one that took a great polish. It is also one of my best completely free-formed cabs.
Picasso Stone - this is another largish free-form. I love the pattern in it. Reminds me of fossil bones in situ. This is material I got from rockpowell
It was a mix of materials, with mixed quality stone and workmanship, but still a fun weekend
Tips for working with any of this material and ID help is always welcome!
Thanks for looking!
