Hi!!!! Im a newborn here and so glad I found this site. Im originally from Wi and have been rockhounding for many yrs. I moved to Sidney, Mt about a yr ago and im completely blown away. Ive never seen such beautiful colors. Being new to the area, I have no idea as far as what im actually finding. I spend most of my time looking for stones at a gravel pit I was lucky enough to get access to. The stones are weather worn, beautifully shaped but I have no idea what they are. I swear ive found rubies. (I hope anyways) along with a garage full of Montana agates. If I took some pics of some of the stones I've collected, would anyone be willing to help me identity them? Can post pics later this afternoon. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ty

Welcome to the board agateeyes! Being newish myself I have found everyone here to be extremely helpful. I can speak to your question about identifing a possible ruby find. UV flashlights are a great way to identify corundum. I've even spent time searching the North Carolina mountains at night to easily identify corundum. The best UV light that I have found also has the best price tag. DreamskyHope this helps and welcome on board!

Hey everyone! I just picked up a UV light fantastic5. Haven't read up on it yet, hoping its somewhat self explainitory. Searching at night sounds fun. How'd you do? Searching at night was a lot of fun! Filled a small baggy with hot pink and red fluorescing stones. Marginally disappointed in the morning to see that most of what I collected was colorless common corundum. However I was able to turn this disappointment into an idea I for a mosaic to include on my fluorescent display shelf. I plan on creating a small very plain mosaic that will completely transform under LW UV. But like a lot of my ideas it will have to wait for another day. Most UV flashlights are long wave. A true short wave light costs a very pretty penny. But the nice thing about corundum is just how great it looks under long wave. I did a quick search and found the following chart: U.V. Fluorescence: varies with place of origin (Fe content); Burmese Ruby - strong red (Cr); best stones fluoresce in strong sunlight. Thai Ruby - less intense red (Cr+Fe); may show patchy blue fluorescence if heat treated. Sri Lankan Ruby - strong orange red in long u.v.,less strong in short u.v. (Cr). Pink Sapphire - same as above. Padparadscha - same as above. Heat treated may show strong reddish orange in short and long u.v.. Green and most yellow Sapphire - none (Fe + Ni + Ti). Blue Sapphire - none (most; Fe + Ti) to red or orange (Kashmir, Sri Lanka, Montana) in long wavelength u.v.. Heat treated stones may show a dull chalky green fluorescence in short u.v.. Colorless - moderate light red to orange Here is one of my yard rocks collected from Chunky Gal Mountain, NC (the area I've been night collecting). Bubble gum pink sapphire, not personally collected, but from a very close rock hounding buddy of mine. Please ignore the weeds in the picture.

Hey,I also have homemade maps going to the fossil places south of Glendive......But I'm sure the oilfields have changed the roads a bit,but it would still probably get you there... Drive straight out Marsh Road and stop about 2 blocks short of the moto area. Go uphill and there it is. If it is muddy, don't bother. You will not have fun.
