Why a Gy-Roc instead of a UV-10 or a Lot-O? Thumlers and Lot-Os seem to be the favorites here. I don't know much about the Gy-Roc.

Why a Gy-Roc instead of a UV-10 or a Lot-O? Thumlers and Lot-Os seem to be the favorites here. I don't know much about the Gy-Roc. The ability to stack three bowls seems valuable. From what I can tell the gyroc is the only one that does that. Am I incorrect?

You can't do that with a Lot-O.

I have the smallest Gyroc (model b ?) which I bought used with some guidance from an expert friend. Its smaller than my UV-5 and thus handy for small batches. Its not as easy to clean as the bowl is not easily removed and immediately above the exposed moter, but the two speed aspect and readily available/accessible parts replacement is an advantage. It has done a good job so far, tends to walk across the floor if not a good surface, and to its credit can be run with top off or top on without problems, allowing me to monitor movement of stones and adjustment of soap/water levels. I'd buy another in a hearteat if it was used and reduced price, but then I['m a bargain hunter. I have a batch of of apache tears about to come out and that will be a good test of me (not the Gyroc). The bigger units may not be as accepting of errors and a bit more expensive for replacement parts. Tom

Peruano thanks Tom. Just the sort of knowledge I was seeking. Jugglerguy thank you as well. I think unless new info arises its gyroc for me. My idea is a mini setup like Chuck. 20# tumbler for rough. Finished in vibe. 10% rule applies.

A bit more info on the gyrocs as passed to me from a colleague with lots of experience. The smallest one (Model B) is the most bulletproof. The weight of the load is much more critical on the larger ones - they tend to walk across the room or break springs if under loaded or over loaded. I'm assuming the weight of the load is rocks + water + grit. Parts (motor, belts, and springs can be replaced but obviously are from manufacturer and thus more dear than generic analogs. I love my little Model B for its size, but just wish it was easier to clean. Cheers. Tom

Greetings Ladies & Gents, I use two of the original Viking Vibrasonic virbrating tumblers, in a 14lb hopper & 2x 6lb hoppers (not used yet and do no have liners), the hoppers are solid cast aluminium with a thick rubberized-plastic liner, the oldest machine that is currently in use was purchased in 1972 (42 years old) & 1974 (40 years old) for the other. Largest piece I have done so far is 100mm Long X 50mm Wide (4" Long X 2" Wide) a Quartz Rock Crystal shard in the 14lb hopper. The units do not need to be attached to anything, just put them down and they don't go walkies either. The 6lb hopper has an opening of 70mm Long X 70mm Wide (2.75" Long X 2.75" Wide) and you need to run a pair of hoppers at the same time or it self-terminate over time the springs, bearings and belts, due to being unbalanced. The 14lb hopper has an opening of 279mm Long X 82.5mm Wide (11" Long X 3.25" Wide). The hoppers need to be securely bolted down to the base unit or it makes too much noise and eventually break a foot of the hopper. You can either purchase hoppers of 6lb, 14lb or 35lb or install a VSV adaptor and use VSV hoppers to expand the unit found on pages 64 - 66 on Diamond Pacific's current catalog (2014). -- Please click images to open larger images in a new Tab, same with everything that is Underlined! I currently have a 3lb Beach (UK), Lortone QT 12/66 (USA) rotaries & 2x Viking Vibrasonic (Diamond Pacific) (USA) virbrating tumblers, with Silicon Carbide grit F80, F220, F600, F1200, with Tin Oxide (1.0 micron) & Aluminum Oxide (1.0 micron & 0.3 micron) polishes. I hail from (The Barony of Seabegs) Bonnybridge, Stirlingshire, U.K, where aliens (15mb) sometimes come for a visit & about 4 miles west from that monstrosity & 7 miles west of this new monstrosity!
