I bought a couple of pieces of rough K2 rough at a gem and mineral show yesterday and could not wait to cab it so I bought it, cabbed it, and grooved it the same day. Would already have them wrapped too but I am out of Sterling wire at the moment. Anyone have any suggestions for a final polish? I took these to 14,000 on the wheels but was wondering if ZAM on a buff would help now. First time cabbing this stuff but now I want more Thanks for looking Chuck

Beautiful. I'd be embarrassed showing my attempts at a circle.

Beautiful. I'd be embarrassed showing my attempts at a circle. For some reason I am much better suited for cabbing calibrated shapes. After three years of cabbing I still rarely attempt freeforms. I am a designer/engineer by trade so maybe my mind just works better when things are done to print, lol. Chuck

Chuck I use templates and also use previously cut cabs including free forms as templates for new cabs (put two sided tape on the back). I cut some freeforms free hand. My problem with circles is that my girdles aren't so hot and that shows up more on circles. Also cabs other than circles need even front back and side to side doming. Circles require accurate 360 degree doming.

I've never heard of K2, other than K2 skis. Going to google it now.

Ok, so it's related to the skis, which were named after the mountain that the rock comes from. Cool.

There are a lot of ebay auctions for the material.

Yep its a fairly new material (around 2 years) being found at the base of the K2 mountain range in Pakistan. I should have bought more while I had the chance. No more rock shows around here till spring and I prefer to buy this kind of rough in person when possible. Chuck

Chuck is gonna have to loosen up and go free style I am wound too tight for free styling. I am pretty darn calibrated in most everything I do. Maybe down the road when retirement hits, lol

From what I see you got the lapidary stuff dialed in quite well.

I struggle with calibrated, and really struggle with circles. I am going to post my son's first two cabs..he nailed circles on both, ungrateful little *%£¢%&$@. "These are EASY dad!"..
Sorry, went of on a tangent lol.
Love the material. I hadn't heard of K2 either. That is done pretty stone!

I'm a beginner. Circles are my favorite. I core drill them to form, dop, then put them in a rotary drill. Hardest part is finding the center on the back for the dop stick.

The engineer in me wants what it wants. I really like the geometric perfection of a well formed circle or oval. I am reminded of Giotto 100swallows.wordpress.com/2007/09/14/giottos-o/ (hey it's not every day you are compared to a Renaissance art genius)

Very nice indeed. That blue against the white is beautiful & the round shap of the cabs is perfect for the round blue spots.

us 50000 paste on a canvas pad K2 takes a great shine.. I'll try that next time. I did not see any difference from the 8,000 nova to the 14,000 paste on canvas so I stopped there. Chuck
