Found this over the summer. Seems to be very hard like agate, steel and glass don't scratch it and it leaves a mark on the plate, but it is colorless. what about the grain in this piece? It is very worn, especially on the lighter colored end though all of it seems to have a similar consistency, the rock is just different colors in different places. Can anybody tell me what it is (A rock, ok, got that part down gotta anticipate some of you guys!) Thanks so much for any info you may be able to give.

I have seen similar rock here but don't know what it is either. This could end up being another one of your "nobody knows" rocks that you are so good at finding. You could start a new TV show called "stump the geologist" and be a hit. Jim

Could be a fine grained metamorphic quartzite. Used to find lots of similar stuff along Indian Gulch road in the California foothills. Cutting it would tell more as then you could see if it showed wood cellular patterns. These water rounded roughs are hard to ID unless in hand......Mel

wondering about its being water stained feldspar, but there doesn't seem to be any crystal formation, seems to be microcrystalline. Jim I hate to stump the geologists, I am too curious by nature. "inquiring minds want to know". I'll be pleased to send it to anybody who wants to dissect it and give a diagnois. Worth the postage for the education. Thanks!

I get fooled by those type of rocks that outer stained rind causes me to pick those up because I think the color goes through the rock then when I cut it its white compacted limestoneish in the middle pretty neat --but not really polish able
Yours is probably filled with gold though hope so Ed
