For those thinking of getting a low speed bench grinder to convert to lapidary use, Woodcraft has one on sale for $100 , Oct. 25-Nov. 26. 1/2 H.P. 1750 R.P.M., 8"x1" wheels. Edited to fix my omission for those not familiar with Woodcraft. See: www.woodcraft.com

Seems my 8 inch bench grinder runs at 3600 RPM. I do not like it, too darn fast. I never checked it, but seems like 3600 RPM. Is that possible Larry ? Man do I have to keep the wheels dressed true on that thing. Vibrates to Oregon when out of balance 8 inch wheel at 3600 is scary, 1750 a whole lot friendlier. Do you think the bearings would do well if that was mounted vertical ? I know some bench grinders will accept face sanders and deal with side loads. Would be unorthodox, the plant engineer would freak out ha. we could mount it on a pivot so it could rotate 360 degrees....ha again

Most bench grinders run at 3600 unless variable speed, see motor plate for info. I doubt mounting one on end would work well, bearings likely not designed for full time side [thrust] load, only radial load. Woodcraft puts these on sale once or twice a year, I would think probably a reasonably good quality, they have 5-year guarantee. Regular price is $140.

That sounds like a sweet machine.

I don't think most bench grinders are brush type motors, but instead are induction motors. So that speed controller wouldn't work.
