Can't you just bypass the heater core to see if that is the problem?

good idea it may already be bypassed although I can't see it from the top and I sure ain't crawling under the car I'll never get back up Ha ha
the system is clean enough for the winter by summer I might have to take more drastic action and for as warm as this fall is I won't miss the heater this winter maybe a day or 2
as long as I can keep this car rolling I can keep rock'n
finger crossed except while grinding mostly

Old thread but rust never sleeps and I couldn't figure out where the rust was coming from
8 months later I got my answer the hard way
I had a person change the freeze plugs two years ago because of the a leaking coolant problem
There was some discussion about one freeze plug being a real bear to change but I assumed they were all changed. WRONG!
So I've been flushing my radiator every six months because of rust keeps showing up. I flushed it this last weekend.
MISTAKE!
I loosen the rust on the one freeze plug that wasn't changed ! Now it need to be. As I got major coolant leak.
Major job ! As the transmission need to be removed to get to it.
What to do? What to do?

Your best bet is take it to a shop that will power flush the system. both the radiator and heater core likely need replaced. A hose and prestone radiator flush isn't gonna do the trick when the system is that bad

I agree Arlen I think most my rust was coming from the heater core It will probably will need to replaced, eventually but this is Phoenix I could live with it by-passed ha ha I'm hoping my radiator is good I've driven the car 30,000 miles since I've owned it and have flushed the system 5 times so the radiator should be clean but hopefully not to clean if ya know what I mean.. mostly thanks Ed

Depending on how old the car is and the expence of the repairs on it-would it be time to look for another ride?

Good question Mike that what I'm debating
The transmission need to be dropped to get to this errant freeze plug so its a major job
its '93 Celicia nice car-- a sought after car to a certain crowd
how much do you think would be a good price on repair?

ED...you have a 2.2 and from what i see you cant bypass the frost plug. How many miles? The tranny has to be dropped so 500 isnt a bad price. Here you would be looking over a grand for this service work.

the car as 102,000 miles when I bought it 3 years ago it only had 83,000 miles on it it sat in a garage for 5 years. Unfortunately the previous owner didn't prepare the coolant system right So even though I bought the car for a killer price lots of the seals are bad and the freeze plug issue is a major expense. yep though... I think my mechanic buddy is cutting me a good deal He's honest and a hard working dude I always tip him well he like working on this car So the car got it problems and I keep fixing but all'all it been a good ride and I will always get a good resale Thanks spiritstone !

Right on Mike ! When I got this car everyone told me that they 'run forever ' And jokily I said: “everyone but this one” Ha Ha It as caused me some repairs but it never left me stranded in a bad situation and the repairs over the long haul have been much less than a car payment would be. If I hadn't been so diligent about flushing out the rust the freeze plug would still be gunked up and sealed. I see where I mentioned that in my 14th post of this thread. So it got me. Luckily-- with starting this new job I have the money to make the repair. Look like I'm on the bus & feet for a few days have mercy Keeping 4 wheels on the ground an rolling can be a challenge...

I'm sorry to hear that your car is not well, mohs. I agree with you having your car repaired vs the cost of a new car with a payment. Hope it won't be long before you're on the road again.

Fossilman is right. If it isnt going to nickle and dime you to death, then have it repaired. The hardest part to bite, is the price of the part itself, 2.00 bucks if that? for 500 in labor, seals and new fluids. But in the long run, you'll have your baby back on the road, with a smile on your face. Fossil man I would gladly drop a tranny or fix a ford any day compared to the confined space Toyota tends to leave you to work on some parts. Sometimes I figure and get frustrated that it would be easier to undo the motor mounts and yank that engine right out for repairs. lol

Perhaps the best option at this point is to replace the radiator. If after getting a new radiator, you still have rust problems, replace heater system. OR, replace the entire engine and trans all at the same time.

Thanks guys Here's the front of the car and that is a famous RTH member who jumped a fence to rock hound and old rock shop location Ha Ha Yep-- It may be time to sale the car after this repair. Sometimes nickel & dime is what you get. And the general rule is if you owe more money on the car than what it worth and the repairs don't add anything to the value. That's a nickel dime dilemma, Being that I own the car out right I think I'm still ahead Its a coin toss if a car payment is better.... mostly
