Qualities, like from junk bone to beautiful bone to cab? Color makes a difference too, location of bone for color difference and etc... Seems the bone from Utah has the best colors and workmanship so far.... I have dino bone I found in Montana, that is great for display, but would be a poor bone for cabs..

Here is a vertebra that I found in Montana, not good quality for workmanship, but great for display....... I shaved it,will find the photo..Its for display only.. So I shaved it,put it in my display... Here is another I found, but of poor quality for cabbing..Great for display....(to many fracture lines in in..) So just shaved it for my collection.. This one was given to me from a friend in Wyoming,it also can't be cabbed, because of the hairline fractures in it,but will make a great display piece.. Here is a dino bone I found that had the center crystalized,I left it just as is,for my collection..... Here is a great find too,a dino bone with two joints that match..Display only... I gues,I get more enjoyment out of a bone in its natural state, than I do a cab.....Thumbs up

Location, location, location makes a great dino bone from a bad one(for working purposes only) There never is a bad dino bone in theory or my opinion..(Its all history) ....LOL
A few people on here have some beautiful bone that they work with for cabbing,I have a few....I'll see if I can pull up some photos from them.. Cell structure and minerals play a big part in having a beautiful bone worth being a cabbing piece... Hope some more people on here will give some input and photos of their dino bone..(I know they are on the forum)

Exactly! Also i'm talking mostly "scraps" of bone... not bones that actually look like bones (as they would be display pieces for me as well ). Those are some nice specimens fossilman! fishing expeditionphrase of fishing 1.a search or investigation undertaken with the hope, though not the stated purpose, of discovering information getting people to send me free stuff. No, that is not what my intent is, my intent is to see the differences thats all, but I will not be sending $10+/lb on any materials in the near future that I can foresee. I do have a small piece that I bought along with some other stuff from a member on here that i might make a cab out of and leave the rest for specimen (it has a cut that didn't go so well on it that i'd need to take off). Right now i'm only cutting large stuff with my thick saw (mostly Alaskan stuff which some is nice and some is junk). i'll cut my smaller stuff later on, my drying bucket us full of slabs and stuff that needs to dry before i can resume as it is a small bucket.

This is a piece that my co-worker gave me a few years ago because it has quite a few cracks in... I'm guessing its medium / low quality?

I know I posted some over the last couple of years. Try search. Also, you can learn a log just looking at the range of material offered on ebay, or check out Different Season's Jewelry. There is also a facebook Gembone Lovers group

I have done a bit of searching but that came up with lots of mixed results.. also this may help others that are pondering buying it like what to look for besides fractures.
Sounds good Fossilman.
