We got an application to be a dealer at a local craft bazaar, and the show managers want a $25 non-refundable payment just to jury our stuff. Table and electricity fees [about average] are on top of the jury fees, so the $25 just goes away. Is this jury fee a normal practice in other areas?

What value is added by this "jury fee"?

Some of the higher end art shows do this, simply to cull the number of applications they receive.

I've never done that. I have had to send photo's of my booth and jewelry in with the application but never anything like that.

that's new to me too! Just did my first craft show/bazaar and did better than I hoped, but there were no extra fees for anything... even the larger shows around here don't do that.

There are a couple bazaars and the farmers market in the summer that have a jury fee. It's pretty common in art shows, sends the message that if you're not ready for their show don't waste their time.

fossilman: It's the upcoming Christmas bazaar at the Yamhill County museum. shotgunner: Nope, nuthin', just pay 'em to look at your stuff. Lee: True, there's a gallery uptown that puts on a recycled/repurposed mtls. show and sale [everything has to be for sale] every year, and they near get your skin, or first born, by the time you are done. Their excessive "pride" takes the fun, and participation, out of it for us.

If they had a competition you could enter (or opt out of) and the fees went to prizes or to pay judges, that would be a different scene, that is why I asked.
In the case where the 'jury fee' is a junk fee, then you have to add all the costs up and decide if THAT is worth spending to be at that show. You can't waste energy perseverating over that fee on it's own. Not worth the heartache.

Craft/Christmas shows are a dime-a-dozen here now. My wife went to her favorite one this afternoon, not so much to buy, but to catch up with several people she knows that vend there. Apparently this jury fee thing has caused considerable unrest in the area.
