Quick question here. I have been using Cerium Oxide polish for my quartz rocks in the polishing stage. I went to use some on a new batch I am doing and I was out. I have some Aluminum Oxide Polish and threw that in. But I also have Tin Oxide Polish, Which is better or does it matter. Moh's scale 7 on the quartz. Thanks for the help. Ed M.

AO will sure put the shine on the quartz. Not a thing wrong with it.

Tin oxide, i've learned, works REALLY well on a lot of stones...but it is expensive. I usually reserve it for my favorite stones or softer jade nephrite. With aluminum oxide, I use 1000 as an "extra step" for softer stones...to help the polish along.

I use Tin Ox & reuse it, so cost isn't an issue. I use tripoli as a pre-polish. I know a lot of folks here us AO with excelent results.

I've used AO polish on quartz and agate, etc. with excellent results.

pghram: Re-use T.O. ...great idea. How many times can you re-use it?

I'm not really sure, pghram is the one that re-uses it. You can check with Rich from above post.

RE: Re-using polish
Polish is just a grit, that is super fine. If it breaks down like larger grits then what you are left with is finer polish. There will be a minimum size. That may be the size you bought it at. Experimentation will tell.

pghram: Re-use T.O. ...great idea. How many times can you re-use it? I don't know because I have never hit any limit. I do occasionally add a little new to the barrel because you do loose some in the process. If anything it seems to work even better, but that may be my imagination ;>) Rich

I doubt it's your imagination. Seems to me use makes it finer and the re-use makes it better. You observation seems to confirm.
