Does anyone know the dates for the Madras show? I tried looking online with no success. Trying to plan a teip that includes Madras and the field trips. Any advice on where to go? Thank you, Randy.

It has always been over 4th of July, this year the week before. In talking with one of the people that run it, the 4th will be it again next year. The 4th is on Saturday next year, show will be July 3,4,&5, or maybe 2nd too. Keep an eye out. We were up there this year, lots to see. Where you go advice depends on what you want to see and/or do.

Thank you Quartz for the dates. I think Thunder Eggs and Agate or Jasper are our area of interest. Plan to go to Richardson's Ranch for sure. I appreciate any information.

If you have time and wish to do some driving, look up Congleton hollow on web. On the road to Paulina, turn right at mile post 51 east of Prineville, limb cast and some pet. wood 4 miles off the paved road. Mostly a digging show, some surface. At about mile 46 east of Prineville, go south on Camp Creek Rd. [paved] for ~10 miles. The road will split, take it to the left, and turn to gravel. From here to Price-Twelvemile road, about 9 miles, there is some limb cast, pet. wood, and a fair amount of jasper to be found. Turn right on Price-Twelvemile, comes out on Hwy 20 at Brothers, then West to Geo. Millican road. North on Geo. M. goes back to West side of Prineville, then return to Madras is easy. A good map advisable.

The Prineville show is the week prior to the Madras show, with many of the same sellers, so you have some flexibility. Both shows sponsor digs to some places that are normally off-limits. The website for Prineville is here and the Madras show gets announced here. They don't announce the special digs until late Spring.

If you had to choose Prineville or Madras which one would you attend? The 2 towns are barely 30 miles apart, and I live fairly close to both, so I usually go with whichever fits with my schedule (both if possible, and I usually take in the small Sisters show that runs around the same time). If interested in digging, I would also take into account which sites they will be offering this year. Prineville is a bit cooler than Madras, so more pleasant as far as summer temps and a nice small town in the middle of rockhound country that's a mix of mountain forests and desert. Madras is closer to Richardson's. Jefferson county also has its share of rock sites, but access to most is limited (on private, tribal or corporate lands) it is generally dry, treeless (except for scrub juniper) and can get very hot. There are some spectacular campgrounds at Lake Billy Chinook southwest of town in the awesome Deschutes canyon, especially if you like to fish, but things fill up quickly on the July 4th weekend. No admission is charged for any of the shows, though you do have to sign up for a membership if you decide to go on the sponsored digs.

If you go to Prineville don't camp on site there, they have a LOUD rodeo next door on the same weekend. I hear Prineville reservoir has a nice campground, but we have never been there.

Ochoco reservoir, just east of town, has a very nice campground run by the county (and some nice rocks along the shore). Prineville reservoir south of town that you mentioned has a state campground also with cabins, rv hookups, etc. You'd need to reserve a spot at either due to it being high vacation season. There are some more primitive campgrounds in the Ochoco National Forest on the east/southeast sides of Prineville. The Whistler Springs campground up in thunderegg country east of town is in beautiful, dense forest (bring the mosquito repellent, though) and free for tent camping—no hookups, but a nicely maintained restroom and picnic tables.

R&G came the other day, and in it is an ad stating the Madras, OR show will be June 25-28, this year. Last year we were assured by one of the people running the show that it would be over July 4th this year, guess sumpin changed.
