This is a contract tumble that wife requested for her lamp parts. She wanted the chrome and galvanization removed to eliminate shine and promote rust/tarnish. She has me do this a lot, to all kinds of weird stuff. No questions asked, I just do what she says. Ran this 2 pounds in a Lortone 12 pound barrel damp with AO 46 for 24 hours at 32 RPM. Flash rust 10 minutes later, one of her targets Then this load of mostly coral with unneeded glass filler(for agate). 3 days AO1000, 2 days AO 14,000 This time testing bigger tumbles, all polished well Washed down larger pieces This load had a good bit of very pitted/grit holding corallites. Saw no ill effects, I know trapped 30/60 and 220 came loose in the vibe This is some messed up stuff. Has a dead wet shine on the flat areas. Would make some alien cabs for sure. Better on a wheel where the grit stays put. Got a 50 pound chunk of it. Some 5 and 10's too. Not sure what to think about it. Then reloaded half big obsidians and half glass filler. With AO 220. To see if it will break down to polish level. And then go to 14,000, sort of a don39 trick The some of the big obsidians, tortured from rotary experiments LOL Seven pounds glass filler AO 220 chosen to hopefully remove frost damage from rotary Some of the larger in the barrel Bag used to clean glass filler with water from pressure washer. fantastic5 wanted these heavy bags for collecting, I use them when snorkeling, like dive bags Vibe mixed the batch with out effort. Fingers crossed

Cool finish on the metal fixtures. You and Mrs P make quite a team!
Glad the new machine is not sitting idle - never thought it would mind you.
They are all cool but I love that botryoidal coral piece.

Cool finish on the metal fixtures. You and Mrs P make quite a team! Glad the new machine is not sitting idle - never thought it would mind you. They are all cool but I love that botryoidal coral piece. That little 2 pound load of metal parts was tumbled with a few tablespoons of water. Even at that the 12 pound barrel was starting to bulge from gas pressure and had 100% foam. Tumbling metals in water in a closed container makes reactions. Nickel and copper can darken the load. She uses sulfuric acid to alter the stains, on some metals muriatic acid. and to speed patina A contract tumbling biz would be a nice home business. Have pondered ways to do such. I think metal parts would have a demand for such services. The botryoids are common in only one of the coral bearing rivers. It is the northern most river and was most effected by silica rich clay washed down from Appalachian uplands. May have something to do with it. Sawing a coral that has been encased in clay that has a botryoidal lined cavity is odd. The cavity is packed full of pasty grey/blue clay requiring a pressure washer and a lot of spraying to remove the clay. The clay impaction served as a perfect preservative.

The partially silicified corallites have many tiny drusy cavities. During the rotary tumbling process many 30/60 grit particles get jammed in the cavities. There must have been a dozen pieces of it in this vibe load full of grit particles. The vibe seemed to have knocked the particles loose. They were still wedged in the cavities after AO 500 in the rotary. I was surprised there were no scratches were caused in the vibe at AO 1000 and AO 14,000. Here is one of the pieces before they went in this vibe load, they were all packed with SiC 30/60:

I'm a tad confused about this "contract" thing? Does this contact read that you get paid for your work? Does it read that you do the work free of charge or,,, Does it read that if you don't do the job the Mrs will have a contract out on you?? LOL I scored big time with the Mrs yesterday,,,,she was cleaning out her Tupperware "hoard" and I came away with a full garbage bag full of all sorts of shapes and sizes of great plastic containers! The best part is that now I can go on a "raid" and take anything I want out of that cabinet. If I get caught I'll just tell her she messed up and put it in the "toss pile" and I grabbed it! The metal parts came out great. How do you get a "flash rust" on them? I think having the glass filler with the agate is a good idea cuz it creates a lot more surface contact? The coral looks like it came out great! Now for the obsidian test! LOL Good Luck,,, connrock

I often do this with more delicate pieces or those which have fractures. After the 220 Grit stage I can be seen outside scrubbing my rocks with a toothbrush night after night on clean outs. After those stages however, the incidence of residue on later 600, 1000 grits is much reduced. I guess it is harder for the smaller particles to cling or get trapped in the cavities.

Ian, maybe just a run in the vibe will clean or vibrate the particles out. I pulled these problem grit catching rocks out of the vibe after an hour and noticed the grit had been shaken out of them. Of course I was concerned that it was going to scratch the rocks, am puzzled why it did not.
I think a run in the vibe without grit may be a great way to get the grit out. Next time, I will put these grit catchers in the vibe and add say glass filler to make up the balance. And see if an hour in the vibe shakes them out. Then wash and refill.
Yep, the residue from small grits seems negligible, or the vibe breaks them down to a harmless size.
i have to take a needle and physically break some of those 30 grit SiC particles to remove them; it takes a lot of time.

Tell her she messed up ? I wanna be a fly on the wall for that one LOL. As soon as Georgia acid water hits it after galvanization is removed rust shows up immediately. I think the water does it. Same rust after freshly ground metal gets condensate or water on it. She may coat it with acrylic to freeze the rust level. Yep, that glass seems to be a good grit carrier. I hope it will not effect the shine on the obsidian, it is running now. will inspect the AO 220 tomorrow to see if it has broken down. if so, I may have to add more if it did not remove the bruises.

iant,,,,,The grit and slurry get into some very tight places and are sometimes VERY hard to see,,,but they ARE there!
I noticed this years ago when I did some very clear quartz. The quarts had a mirror shine to it and when I was looking at it I saw something in the VERY thin surface fractures that looked black.I inspected it with a 10 jewelers loupe and still couldn't tell what it was so I deliberately broke one of the quarts pieces.I was shocked to see very, very fie grit/slurry and polish in that fracture! I took use a tooth brush on problem rocks but found that it didn't work well. You may not see the grit/slurry and polish in fractures with solid colored rocks but I'll bet it is there! connrock

I hate to give all of my secrets away that have taken me almost 50 years to develop but I'm getting older now and I can't take them with me! LOL It does take a bit of time a patience to end up with a nice assortment of different size and shapes of Tupperwear,,,with lids,,,, but I have an extensive collection that I am VERY proud of!
You've found the secret with Tupperware with your own words but just haven't though it through enough!
"50 tops and 50 bottoms and none match"
Tupperware containers are of NO use to our better halves without their lids,,,,are you starting to get the drift here? So,,,during several weeks or even months one simply "requisitions" the lids from the size(s) of containers one wants and needs! In time the Mrs WILL clean out her Tupperwear hoard and ,,,,if yours is like mine,,,will ask if you want any of her "lidless" containers! One key part of success here is to make SURE you only requisition lids from containers she just used! This will leave doubt in her mind that maybe she misplaced it!
The down side of this is getting caught! LOL I am VERY proud to say that to this day I still haven't been caught at this,,,,or at ANY of the MANY other "tricks" I've learned through the years!
I NOW that some women will read this and be on alert but I still have ways of inquiring "things" around the home and you can PM me if needed! LOL
Thanks for the info on the rust. Our well water won't do that but if we leave something out in the rain and let it dry it rusts up pretty fast,,,,,prolly the acid rain?
Hope the obsidian works out for you!
Good luck,,, connrock

I am guessing that Mrs connrock knows your every move before it enters Mr connrocks mind. With the eyes in the back of her head. Maybe I should refer her to the TV program "Deadly Women" to provide fear in your devious motives. Schemes come in many forms. The ladies are capable in these areas. By the way, could you provide photos of your tumbles and grits so the use of the Tuperwares can be seen ?

Although Mrs connrock(Nancy) has gotten much more aware of my schemes and tactics in the past 48 years I can still through a "change up" now and then to keep her thinking! LOL
James I don't have many polished rocks to show here and most of my grit/polish is almost gone! I can take a photo of my latest score on tupperware if you like? connrock

And can refer to them while sleeping. I was thinking blackmail if the photos came on line. But Mrs. Nancy knows exactly where her Tuperwares are. Seems like they have a way of knowing your most secret intentions. Only 30 years, and she nails me every time. I have to step outside to plot.
