Hey Phil,
For best results, toss it in with a load of clothes and add a heaping cup of detergent.

Soak it overnight in a strong bleach solution, scrub under running cold water with a soft bristle scrub brush, let soak again overnight in plain cold water, rinse & dry. Repeat all steps as needed until clean. If the opal has fractures, avoid freezing temps while cleaning. Water in the cracks may freeze & split your piece wide open.
