Well, it has been over 3 hours since the first post, so I imagine that this machine is up and running by now. With the first load almost finished!

Mount that apparatus on the rear rack of an old motorcycle (a Yamaha 650 or Heritage Soft Tail come to mind) - and ride to Texas and back and you should have a finished batch of rocks. Or do you have another mechanical vibratory mechanism in mind? Tom

Wow, jamesp, that's 2 tumblers you will have created in a month's time? Looking forward to see this one when you finish it (and tumbles!). Well, it has been over 3 hours since the first post, so I imagine that this machine is up and running by now. With the first load almost finished! Yep, we want pics of the first finished batch, NOW! LOL!!

Lookin' good so far. Do you have anything in mind to line it with? I was following MrP's lead on the steel hopper. He uses a steel tank and has no issues. I asked him the same question. Will be using 500 and finer grit, so wear should not be an issue. Pipe is a little thicker than 1/8, but end caps are 1/8. The bottom seems to get the most wear on this type. This design is called a vibratory 'tub' tumbler, common in industry. so I studied the industrial models. They are all similar in function; except a high powered engineer has probably done 50 pages of calculations that are way beyond my understanding. So this one will skip the calculations and have many holes to move the eccentric and easy access to the eccentrics for trial and error adjustments. Maybe the sweet spot will happen. Having the Viking helps know what is gentle enough. The $1.10 locking collar eccentrics are cheap and can be thrown away/modified allowing new attempts to get the right weight needed. Went w/a shorter barrel and a single belt drive, may still get left to right hopper imbalance that may damage the rocks.(see-saw rocking) That pipe is supposed to stay horizontal as it vibrates or the rocks may pile to the left or right or center.

Making everything open air so that bolts and adjustments are accessible. Used to get chewed out by the mechanics for not paying attention to that detail. And don't blame them for that well deserved grievance. Thank God OSHA is not here poisoning the design. Yes it lacks guards and get off my property. Go put someone else out of business. Purchased a couple dozen of those angle iron boxes for not much dinero years ago, handy for all kinds of things like bases.

Springs go where??
How will you attach that beast to bedrock? May cause an earthquake.

Wondering the same kinda thing. I don't yet understand which part of this will be "floating" to allow the barrel to vibrate. I'm just gonna watch this work in progress as I figure all will be revealed in due time. Not sure of an unlined barrel either. Been trying to find the post from Mr. P on that... It's a heck of a show though and I'm wondering how long before we can start ordering James-O-Vibes aside: been eyeballing my vibrating laps and thinkin' on whether the base of one of these units could be used to attach a vibe barrel such as James has made here. Will put that on my list of things to think about tomorrow.

Springs go where?? How will you attach that beast to bedrock? May cause an earthquake. These things run surprisingly gentle. I think they are only as good as they are gentle. The problem is getting it to run gentle. All 3 dimensions of vibration has to be constrained to making an orbital/elliptical motion along the axis of the hopper, I think. springs under all 4 corners of the angle iron of the top structure(blue angle iron).
