Hey all, I hope you are well. I have left Vancouver Island to pursue a job in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. I will continue updating www.bcrockhound.com with rockhounding finds and whatnot up north. However, I've started a new blog to document my experience moving to such a faraway location and starting a new chapter in my life. You can find it at www.northernjournalist.com if you are interested. I'll be updating it with lots of pictures, thoughts and stories from the north. My job might have me stationed at remote locations, such as Inuvik and places in Nunavut. I'm especially excited for those opportunities. I'm posting this from Clearwater, BC. My girlfriend has joined me on the trip up north and will be flying home from Yellowknife. I am very thankful for her support. Please have a nice day. Thank you.

I will be a reporter for Northern News Services, which runs seven papers in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

bcrockhound: Nice of you to share your journal for your new adventure. I read it today, and will now bookmark it so that I can keep up on your adventures and storytelling. I like the fact that you have not just told your story, but have shared the pictures along the way. Keep it up, and I hope that you don't get so busy that you cannot continue to share with us in your journal.

Excellent! Thanks for taking us along. But when are you gonna tell us what your new gig is? Uhhh... Mark? He's a journalist. Oh Okay. For some reason I wasn't thinking of being a journalist in YellowKnife as a "career advancement". I haven't been to Yellowknife, but have read a bit. I think the population is only about 20,000. Maybe this is like a Nat Geo thing or something? It wasn't clear at all to me what he was gonna do. Anyway, good luck and thanks for sharing.

Watching with interest Stew, will follow and live vicariously through your eyes. I have enjoyed the trip so far, it is nice to know you are continuing it. I should have been so self directed and focused at such a young age. You know where you want to be, what you want to do in this life, and you just keep working toward it. It is a young man's life adventure, and we get to be in from the start. You are gifted and you have a vision, and the drive necessary to get there. I predict a time we can say: "we knew him when".

Looking forward to some north country trip reports. You will have some adjustments to make being away from dallasite. And so will the forum. Bet you will find another quarry to pursue at your new location.
If you are going to nomad around, do it while young, see the world when you have the energy. Often gets more difficult to do as you get older.
stay in touch and be careful up there. RTH is still operational from way up there. James

I definitely like to post pictures, though often for lazy reasons. Pictures take up space! Uhhh... Mark? He's a journalist. Oh Okay. Maybe this is like a Nat Geo thing or something? It wasn't clear at all to me what he was gonna do. Anyway, good luck and thanks for sharing. It's not the Vancouver Sun, but it is an experience few of my peers will have and community journalism has been my career so far. I do plan eventually to transition into technical writing. This job will basically be coverage of the whole Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Though the populations are small, the significance of this position is higher than in a similarly populated town in BC. James Like you and snowmom said, now is the time for me to do these kind of things. I had the opportunity and couldn't say no. I would definitely regret it down the line. Thanks, all. I've made it to the Northwest Territories. It's been too easy so far. I was hoping for a little more struggle.

www.google.com/search?q=Yellowknife&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=Jg7LVObxD4myggTjzoCIDA&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAg&biw=1024&bih=699wow... lots of Northern Lights potential. Very cool. Read about the closed down gold mine. Over a mile deep! Read they may make it into some kinda geothermal production site. Say it could heat half the town. THEN I Googled the weather................ The freakin' HIGH for the next week is like NEGATIVE 25° F --- NOT counting wind chill. Feels like lows are around -50° !!! Are you kidding me??? That's insane. Your nighttime low feels like temperature is over 100 degrees colder than it will be here tonight. I'm speechless

Your nighttime low feels like temperature is over 100 degrees colder than it will be here tonight. I'm speechless Ha! It is very cold, and feels like if you lock yourself out of your room/car you could die pretty quickly. It's a dry cold though and as long as you have many layers on and as much skin as possible covered, it's not that bad. The wet cold around the coast is worse. I've always thought -20C in a place like Yellowknife is equivalent to 0C in Vancouver. Can you believe there are homeless people there? I like the cold more than the darkness. The most outrageous thing about the north is the cost of living. The rent and food are very expensive. We crossed the 60th parallel yesterday.

Enjoy your new home, and cant wait to hear the rest of the story. The summer days are endless to the point if you dont have dark curtains, you wont be sleeping. Mosquitoes well..... eat you alive. Have gone as far as Repulse bay. No windows or doors face north, you get snowed in. It was a little bit of culture shock. You'll see.... Dont want to spoil it for you .lol One thing I wanted to tell you, because I'm not that far away and aware of this underground containment. Beware of what your handle at the old pits. My local rock club takes trips up there in the summer.

this is going to be great! *snort* Stew-cicle 2015 My reenactment of that picture: Enjoy your new home, and cant wait to hear the rest of the story. Everyone seems very cryptic about their northern experiences. I've also been told quite blatantly that there are serious addiction problems with the natives. Is Repulse Bay as nice as it sounds?
