There's "Whink" rust stain remover. It contains HydroFluoric Acid. You may be able to find it in the cleaning supplies at the grocery store. No hydrofluoric in whink. click on MSDS on this page to see the ingredients. They are aimilar to sulfuric. Should work well.My bad. Whink does have a tiny amount of HF. The product I referred to above is rust and stain remover which has zero fluorine. It is made by whink but is not the classic whink...

Mark, if hydrochloride does wash the varnish off, let me offer you another option.
Get some Drain Cleaner at Home Depot that is 100% sodium hydroxide. Make a 3% solution 3 grams in a hundred or similar. The oxides will become hydroxides.
Iron hydroxide is yellow and manganese is pink. With my weak solution it may take some time. You can go stronger if you are comfortable. We're gloves and eye protection. Add water to base then dilute to strength. Do outside.
You can use the same drain cleaner to make soap or some killer pretzels...

SD is lye. I use it frequently. I have to wait until spring as it is colder than heck here. The solution will freeze in an hour.

Lye it is, indeed. Ya gotta make pretzels. The best use of lye ever?? Some drain cleaners with hydroxides also add aluminum flakes to form an aluminum hydroxide when mixed with water which helps to gel up the hydroxide solution. Not recommended for pretzels.

Mark K, maybe they'll have some other suggestions on the FB mineral cleaning group that jakesrocks recommended since the lye will freeze outdoors and there are heathens in the house. At this point with the house full of heathens... ROFL!

The heathens are not going away any time soon. My sister dumped her boyfriend or whatever he is and her and the 2 kids are here until they find something. And 2 min pins. Can't forget those barking PoS.

Yes, I just mentioned that because I use the hydroxides in various experiments and went o go buy some one time not realizing that some of it had the aluminum particles in it. Now I just buy my hydroxides online so I know I am getting 100% sodium or potassium hydroxide. And a reminder, this is a chemical you need to be very careful handling. It is caustic.

I gotta ask, how do you make pretzels with lye? I make my favorite pizza dough recipe, for the pretzels, soak them in 3% lye for 3 seconds, allow to dry then bake as usual. Awesome!
