Shotgunner, If you can get your hands on a copy of LaRunes rockpecker notes, it is full of chemical, and blow pipe tests for the various metallic minerals. Robert.

I broke a piece off the slab I had and cabbed it just to see what would happen. It had a metallic smell as I was grinding it(no surprise there) and it took a high gloss shine-almost looks like chrome, although the pics don't show it. You can see in the pics the lime green/yellow specks, and with a 10x loupe I can see they look like crystals. Even polished, the casting marks are still evident. I did a scratch test on a tile, gray/silver, but what was interesting was I chipped the metal with the ceramic tile, so it is brittle.

Ed, looks like you've already set it in a bezel!!
Is the cab really purple, or is that a reflection?

Pat, I'm not sure where the purple tinge came from, it's not in the metal. Scott, I want to say they are Peridots, but then I'd be implying a meteorite-but they do look like it.

I just ran across a science nerd forum where pure manganese did react with hydrochloric acid to make pink solution. I believe this rules out manganese. Chrome is out, Mohs 4. Cannot wait for xray flourescence

watching with interest. Anything happening here (besides Scott working 10 hour days every day for a long time now)?

sure did polish up nice. Chromium has a s.g. of a little over 7.0, if you have ore mixed with olivine/epidote and maybe a few other things, the s.g. of your piece might be a little lower. Some of the chromium ore photos I saw while doing searches on this thread look similar to your rock (and some don't at all!) keep us posted.

Chromium is Mohs 3.5 or 4 I forget which. I did mail the sample off for XRF. We'll know something by friday I am sure.

I'm surprised nobody has a betting pool going on what it is. Sent him a cutoff of your green stuff too!! Thanks. Not sure if they will be able to do a full analysis though. I don't think they can pick up aluminum with the XRF. Or it may be XRD. Can't remember for sure but was going to have it checked by one of those and they could not do aluminum. So I have samples already sent off to the lab for atomic absorption spectrometer testing, 32 element. Hope to have results within a week or two.
