Where is a good place to get to the yellowstone river gravels? We're traveling through Montana along the interstate.
Also, any good rock shops along the way?
Thanks, Matt

We enjoyed the colours along the waters in Billings. We want to visit the Glenndive area this spring before the mountain snow melts away. Just might have to make a visit to the Glenndive area when we head north in a couple weeks time. Oh, so much to do and so little time...
Use Google Earth as an aid to assist you where the gravels build up. There are many areas along the river to explore. Not just Glenndive itself!

Matt, try sending a PM to mtmadman, Bob Stecher. He lives in Billings, and always has loads of MT agates. He knows all the good places to hunt. Bob is a heavy haul trucker, and is hauling loads out of Texas right now. I'll contact him and tell him to watch his mail on here.
On a side note, Bob has the weekend off, and is busy hunting rocks in Texas.

There are many fishing access locations where you can get to the river and if you stay on hight water line can fish, walk or hound any place you want legally, but it is good if you can get permission on adjoining lands not necessary, and sometimes not practical.

Terry,MT has an agate shop and the guys name is Bob Gwen, just ask around....Usually can just pull off the interstate towards all the marked fishing holes and walk the gravels... Also Savage,MT has the best rock shop in Montana(its between Sidney and Glendive) well worth the visit....(The Harmon's).. Livingston,MT is a great area too...........( For hounding Montanas)

Thanks everyone for the info.
We stopped at 5-6 fishing access locations from Bozeman to Glendive and found only a handful of material worth tumbling. The next day we stopped north of Glendive in a couple spots and had much better success. There certainly seems to be a lot more to find on the eastern part of the river. Some nice jasper, pet wood and a few agates.
The Harmon's shop was closed, unfortunately, but at least now we know where it is and can stop on the next time through.

I love the Yellowstone.
Hornseeker, on a rare occasion one will find some of this brilliant yellow, orange and other colored jasper in the river. Supposedly it comes from Livingston. Any clue where the deposit is? I know that it is not right below the mountain at the park south of town because all of the rock is of the wrong type.

I have no idea where the source is... and I'd like to know! I have found some beautiful green and red jasper, but nothing yellow/orange!! I would like that!
The river drains SOOO much country and so many mountains worth of material that aren't even there anymore...

I found one piece of bright yellow jasper with some agate running through it, just north of Glendive, would love to find more like it. I'll post a picture when I get around to it

Used to be you could call the Chamber in Glendive but now they either just say they don't know or they pull something out of their asses. Different breed of people there now.

Matt, if you are in Sydney, go south on 16 and take a left at crane to 7 Sisters. Go to the river and hit the rocks there.
DO NOT GET IN THE MOVING WATER.
