Hi all, I was out collecting on my own yesterday. Things were pretty quiet so I thought I would try to take a few videos as I went along. As you will see, I am no great narrator, and have a cold too! I am not used to making videos, and so you may feel seasick watching these, but I think they give a better idea of my rock hunt than still pictures do. I dropped my phone at one point, and came across a buzzard making a hell of a noise. Anyway, I hope you enjoy... link

Those are great videos, Ian! It's been getting down to thirteen below zero here lately at night. We have a foot or so of snow on the ground. Your video makes me excited for spring, but it's soooo far away. That beach reminds me of the type of collecting I do. I tend to walk in the water, but then again maybe you do on a warmer day. The rocks look so much better when wet, so your rainy day probably wasn't all bad. Thanks for the video, I've wondered what it was like finding those little beauties.

I'm glad some of you are finding this interesting, thanks.
Rob, Wow, -13! My temp was 3 degrees and I had my thermals on.
I do have a bit of a problem when rockhounding. I get so excited the night before that I never sleep well at all, and often have a headache when the day itself comes. I have to be up really early to travel to my spots, so when I'm finished I'm usually totally wiped out.
I stay out of the water generally but there are tributaries to cross and I have to watch I don't get cut off by the tide. Also my rocks are generally small so I couldn't see much in the water. Depending on the action of the tide it can be murky too. We do get plenty of rain, so as you say, it can make the more interesting rocks stand out.

Ian, do you mean 3 degrees Fahrenheit or Celsius? It was -13 degrees F here, which is -25 C. You must mean 3 degrees C or the water would be frozen and you wouldn't be on the beach.

Ian, totally enjoyed the videos. When I go out on gravel bars around here I often take along a small plastic garden spade and randomly dig a spot. Come up with some winners that way.

Ian you are an outstanding photographer and have a lovely family.
I promise to watch videos next time I'm here without the iPad.

I'm talking Celsius - we use that generally here. I've been on the beach when it has been frozen but not this year. -25 C! Ouch - that is cold.

Lots of color on your beaches Ian. Those rocks are already sized about right for tumbling. Must be nice to live on an island with rocky beaches.
