On the news here in mild-winter Oregon, we see all sorts of people spinning the dickens out of their tires trying to get somewhere. Do people not use tire chains in the frozen East, or are these pictures shown just to increase the drama of the "news"?

they are illegal in many states, as are snow studs, they tear up the roads. Especially in high traffic areas. Most of the folks in these areas simply don't know how to drive in the snow and ice for lack of experience. well, I guess they are getting experience this year. Surprising how many people don't dress for the weather as well.

Studs outlawed, they should be. Chains outlawed, I don't see.

Winter traveling ? When you get to my age it's travel from the recliner to the bathroom. From the bathroom to the computer. From the computer to the kitchen. Then back to the recliner, cup of coffee in hand. Too danged cold to be out driving around. I've lived all these years. I'm not going out to let some idiot driver kill me on the ice covered roads.
One of these days it will warm up enough to get out in my shop, or take the hotrod for a drive.

I think most places that get lots of snow on a consistent basis are prepared to handle it. If the roads are plowed in a timely manner, why would you need chains? If you know enough not to spin your wheels, driving isn't a problem. It's the places that don't normally get a lot of snow and don't have sufficient equipment to remove it that have the problems.

LOL, Rob, there are idiot drivers in all states, in all types of weather. Here in South Dakota they don't plow the roads until we've had over 3" of snow. 3" on the pavement it plenty to let the idiots slide all over the place.

I used to go 25 miles one way to work, 3"+ of fresh snow was great, packed down, it presented a lot of problems going up hills especially. Snow here is wet and very slippery. I was never embarrassed by chaining up, never ditched, and my wife had the 4WD on those days. Drove a front wheel drive econobox. Idiots aplenty though.
