Is it ok to run a 3 lb (or 4 lb) barrel on a QT66? Would it run to fast and be too rough for the rock? I was thinking of getting a smaller barrel so I could occasionally do a small batch of softer or harder to polish rock in the rough grind and then move them to my 4 lb. vibe to go through the rest of the stages.
Thanks, Andrea

I thought it would slip right through, but I just tried a 33b barrel on a QT66 and it doesn't fall between the shafts. I'm not sure how it tumbles, but it sort of fits,

I run 3, 6, and 12 pound lortone barrels on my homemade tumbler all on the same set of shafts and the speeds are all good when compared to what my stock lortone tumblers would run them at. When I get off work I can toss a 3 pound barrel on my QT12 and check the speed for you. As long as its between 32-45 RPM it will be just fine.

If you can count how many turns in a minute it would help Andrea.
If the 3 pound barrel is smaller(pretty sure it is) than the QT66 barrel you will be fine.

Thanks guys! I just counted the rpm's, it's only 25. That seems slow, I think I have counted it before and it was in the low 30's. I've been running 2 heavy 6 lb barrels for the past several weeks. Is there a way to speed it up? Could the belt need tightened or replaced? Drummond Island Rocks Knowing how fast your machine runs would be helpful. Thanks again, Andrea

25 is very slow. If you are doing stage one coarse grit 40-50 is better but I guess if your doing pre-polish and polish the slower speed would be OK.

maybe I was confused. did you try a 3 pound barrel to check the speed or was 25 the speed of your 6 pound barrel?

Drummond Island Rocks I checked the speed with a 6 lb. barrel. I haven't ordered the 3 lb. yet because I wanted to see if it would work.

Is the belt too loose? Would tightening it up speed it up a little?

I just did some counting for you.
Lortone QT66, fully loaded: 24 rpm Lortone 33b, fully loaded: 48 rpm
Small barrels on Lortone QT66 base: One full 33b barrel: 44 rpm One empty Thumlers A-R2 barrel: 41 rpm
I just bought a Thumlers A-R2 and haven't even used it yet, so I can't offer my opinion of it yet. The barrels seem harder to open and close. I was only able to fit one small Lortone barrel on the big tumbler because they're taller. The Thumlers barrel is shorter but has a bit larger diameter and two barrels will fit on the QT66 base. You might have problems with the barrel rubbing on the end of the tumbler where the bracket is for the the larger barrel. The other end has the little white plastic thing for the barrel to rub on. If the machine was tipped slightly to make the barrels go to the end with the white plastic, everything should be fine.

Thanks for the help Jugglerguy. I would like to be able to run one 3 lb lortone barrel and one 6 lb lortone barrel on the QT66…I'm not sure if you are saying that would be ok or only with a Thumler barrel.

I made you a video. I think I'd go with a Thumlers barrel. The Lortone fits if you put the small barrel on first, but there's very little extra room, so they rub together. The barrels aren't going the same speed, so you can hear them squeaking as they rub against each other. I don't think this is good for the barrels or the motor. The Thumler barrel is shorter and fits better. If you tipped the frame slightly, I think the small barrel would move away from the large barrel. I'd put the large barrel on the end with the bracket that the top nut fits into.

Jugglerguy Thanks for making the video. That squeaking would drive me nuts. So I guess the Thumler's is the way to go. Andrea

Looks like the belt is loose, I would tighten it a bit.

I bought a Thumler 3 lb barrel today…and you're not kidding the barrel is hard to open. I tried to unscrew it, tried to pull it off, finally I figured it out. Can't get the rubber ring back on but I'll worry about that after I load it. I put it on the QT66 with a 6 lb barrel and there is plenty of room. Thanks for your help.
jamesp I thought it might be, I will tighten it this weekend..thanks!

Belt is NOT necessarily loose. Belt should be no tighter than what is needed to keep from slipping with fully loaded barrels turning. Make too tight will destroy the belt.
