I have a burning need to explore the Mineral Mountains in Beaver county Utah an see what treasure I can find. The adventure will take place as soon as it warms up enough. Any fellow adventurers welcome.
I would like to hit the sites in the books, but more importantly find new sites stuff in the pegmatites in the mountains.
Has anybody explored that area, or does anybody have advice for exploring plutonic formations for gemstones in general?

The rock corral area can still be productive for smoky quartz. Aquamarine has been found in small quantities on another part of the mountain but I don't know the details. Be safe if you go out there. the area is very rugged and remote.

Thanks for the info, Don. I was hoping to set up base around the rock corral. Are decent specimens found by digging, surface collecting, out hacking at rocks?

The best pieces are found in the higher formations in pockets. You'll have to carefully chisel the crystals out. sifting through the hills of decomposing granite can also yield good crystals.

I have a co-worker that goes to the mineral mountains quite often. I'll talk to him this next week and see what I can find out about the area and what they go for.

Have you been able to make it down there yet? With all the rain we had over may there's sure to be some gems lying around out there. Here's a smokey we found just laying at the base of one of the cliffs. I have a "not smart" phone so the pic is pretty bad. Here's a shot of the area sorry the pics are so big...the small one's wouldn't attach right! Cheers

I just got word that the BLM Office here in Cedar City is in the process of going to Close off roads in Iron County and BEAVER County too. ( Home of the mineral range) I've seen this road closer In Washington County and it's not good. Will keep you updated. So you better hurry and make your plans and get to the places you want to visit before it's to late. ( The Minerals was one of the places mentioned where and how has not been determined Yet.)
