I binge ordered 50 pounds of apache tears so last week I used one of the lotos to tinker with a few things in my glass/obsidian recipe. I busted up two wine bottles 10 days ago and these are the results. I took notes and will probably make a couple alterations but here's a couple pictures of where I am at so far. after 1 day in 120/220 for those that like the frosted glass look These are after polish. I did not bother and burnish stage because these are really just test scraps to make sure that my recipe did not leave any frosted edges. I dumped one of the medium flat rate boxes of tears for fun. 25 pounds in this pile Give me a little time and they should look like this Thanks for looking Chuck

That's a whole lot of tears. One box wasn't enough?

Jugglerguy - Yeah I went a bit overboard and won more auctions then I thought I would. Oh well I can think of worse stuff to have too much of. I might sell some as rough at shows if I can make a little profit. Chuck

The edges of glass and obsidian give me a hard time. Lots of media or smalls, like 50-60% is the only way the edges don't get frosted when using sugar. If frost occurs on any step it is start over time. Will try the Borax on glass and obsidian soon. Been running those thin flakes that orrum sent in the rotary. Taking a long time to get the edges smooth enough for the vibe. The coral and the Rio Grande agate never gives me thin edge frosting. Fine tumbled glass Chuck. If you can do glass you can do about anything.

I have a box of knapping scraps from orrum too so I am anxious to hear if you have success with those. Chuck

The obsidian gave me such a whipping. I have diverted my interest more towards agate. It takes a long time to shape agate it in the rotary. But it is a guaranteed easy and quick polish.
Orrum's scraps are going to be great practice material for the vibe. May make good filler for other obsidian. Seems like hard filler that is near polished is better though. Still gun shy with the obsidian, ha.

Knapping scraps I sent yall have lots of glass dust and tiny to small flakes to make a slurry and smalls to carry grit. The knappers tumble them and they make curved pendants and earrings The spalls are already smooth and shiny because of the way they are percussion knapped off a larger piece of obsidian. I think they would do great in a vibe.

Great job on the tumbled glass. Superb result on the obsidian is assured!

well done on the glass. did you find you had to check it more often than a normal load of stones? I've found glass (and obsidian and tears) to be way more "gassy" requiring more observation.

KD I don't usually have issues with tears and larger obsidian but wine bottles and beer bottles need to be watched. Must be the alcohol making them gassy, lol Chuck
