Hello all. Unfortunately, the person who sent this to me was limited to only one picture. Can any one take a stab in in the dark and guess whether or not this is a fossil? Located in someone's garden. The area is about two inches long. It was located in San Mateo County, California. USA. Thanks!

shotgunner you never fail, always there to answer. Sure looks like that crystal came to the top of the pile. Very interesting rock. Not a clue. Do I see purple?

the seam down the middle that continues on both ends of that would make it seem like perhaps some sort of replacement action going on there.

If I had to venture a guess on the rock type, I'd say it's a schist...with the dark blue showing, maybe a Kyanite schist? And the void might be where a crystal formally lay? Man, I love guessing on rock IDs without so much as only a picture to go on!

Located in someone's garden. The area is about two inches long. It was located in San Mateo County, California. USA. Not a fossil. It's a crystal of some sort embedded in an intrusive igneous rock--lots of granite in San Mateo County, Calfornia. Not sayin' it's granite, mind you, but it's not of primary sedimentary origin; contains zero paleontology. Perhaps schist (a metamorphic rock), as somebody here suggested? Not likely.
