So I let some biggish rocks grind the bottom out of my UV-10 bowl, and now I'm wondering if it's practical to repair it.
Has anybody done this with epoxy, or should I cut a piece of plastic and epoxy it in, or thick rubber, or don't bother?
Any help is much appreciated!

I don't think they can be repaired. The bowl usually wears thin over time and loses its structure. Did you wear the bottom and side out of the bowl by grinding it thin, or did you puncture it?
My UV-10 bowls usually last about a year if I run the machine almost constantly.
Things you can do to preserve bowl life ... 1) Don't use any grit courser than 120/220. 2) Pre-tumble your rough in a rotary tumbler. Use the vibe tumbler for finishing only. 3) Don't over wet the bowl. If there is too much water and you don't get the toroidal action, you will grind the bottom out. 4) Don't let the bowl dry out. If there is not enough water and you don't get toroidal action, you will grind the bottom out.
Good luck.
Darryl.

Thanks Darryl!
I wore a groove in the bottom, and it opened in one spot.
I knew darn well that I had big rocks in there, and that they weren't coming to the top, but this awful cold has ruined the old brain and in three days the bowl was kaput.
I'm surprised that you're only getting a year from a bowl. That is just pathetic. I'm really not very happy with the build of this machine. It's simply not built for extended use, and the manufacturer should be ashamed. I've actually pondered the idea of complete re-engineering it with quality parts, doing a cost study, and offering the info to the company in exchange for a new one, but I doubt they'd be interested, lol.
I have some very good plastic, and the machinery to mill it into a tightly fitting flat bottom, with bevelled edges. Saw-scoring the bottom of the replacement and using two or four tubes of epoxy is a lot cheaper than buying a new bowl. Question is whether the epoxy will stick, whether grit will get embedded, and whether the flat bottom will allow the correct action.

I have a friend who filled the damaged slot with epoxy from the inside and glued a stiff piece of plastic to the outside of the same area. Patch on the outside minimizes cracks for grit to become lodged in. So make that epoxy fill job on the interior as smooth as possible. I had already discarded a tumble-vibe 5 bowl with similar problem before I heard of this solution so. . . I'm speaking from second hand experience. Its worth a try. Tom

SirRoxalot Is the bowl an industrial bowl made for rock tumbling, blue tape, or does it have yellow tape, not for rocks. When I first goy my UV-18 I made a mistake and had a large rock lodge and wear a spot thin. I used superglue, filling the spot over time by using layers, letting it dry between applications. I have used the bowl for 3 years, and it is starting to get thinner so I use for polish only now. After I saw how the superglue stood up to wear I have coated all my barrels with thin superglue.
I have a 65lb barrel that should be wore out by now but have coated it a couple of times and it is still going. Superglue is cheap compared to a barrel or bowl. I would suggest you do the coating outside because the fumes can get bad with using that much glue............................................MrP
I would post this now but we have no power right now so no internet. I suppose non of you really care that all I can do is work with the page I have open now. Well maybe you should because I don't have much else to do but sit here and type. It is not the nicest day outside today so not sure I want to go out there. High winds, probably the reason for the outage. My bride said we should go to town but have little interest in that because the rock shop is not open. Called and they said we should have power soon, the crews have been notified so they are headed to the shop to get the truck so they can come and fix the problem. Problem is they are required to live in the service area but that can be over 50 miles to the shop then we are about 20+ miles from the shop. The last time this happened the crew was 5 minutes from the house when a bigger problem came up so they called them off and it was 4 or 5 hours later that they put us back on line. All that had to be done was put a new cutout fuse in. I sat on the deck and could see the fuse hang there but nothing I could do. I work for a electrical utility but not the one that supplies me with power.
Not having power sure sucks. Now I know why the people I shut off, for non payment get so mad. Maybe I will think different next time or maybe not. Nice house, nice new 4X4, nice boat, nice 4-wheeler, nice snowmobile, but can't pay the electric bill. Then they have the guts to chew my a$$ as if I caused the problem.
Well the battery is going dead on this computer so will post this when we get power back ......................................MrP
Power is back! 1 hour 25 min........................................MrP

Yeah, I got the right kind, heavy duty with the blue tape.
Thanks a TON for the superglue idea, I sure didn't think of that! The stuff has caused a revolution amongst pen turners, it makes for a really good durable finish and is super-easy to apply. The fumes do me in though, I'll have to wait for warmer weather to fix my bowl.
