I think this would be my final question, to be on the over safe side, would 1/4" thick 6061 T651 aluminum be thick enough to hold the rock or for it to fall onto on the other side without movement or would 1/8" thickness work? I don't think I would be cutting anything over 25 pounds
Edit: After a lot of searching, I think I will go with 1/8" thick carbon steel plate for the feed, the bearing block by the blade will be on 1/4" thick 2" or 3" 6063 T52 aluminum angle, some 1" angle aluminum going vertically to support it more, then just 1/16 carbon steel over that for the cut rock/slab to fall on. And would be able to get free shipping so would cost a bit less lol

Got the 1/2hp 1725rpm 115V 7.2A motor(only a little over $60) and a lot of the other parts today. Only issue I see is I didn't notice on ebay that 2 of 3 v belt pulleys didn't have a key on them, guess it only being 1.5" would make sense, think those will still work? Then with a 8"x2" grit wheel drum, I don't think it is ment to be re-used, but I bought some 1/8" rubber too, so with that and a thin aluminum sheet backing Ill see if I can turn that into a re-usable 8"x3" grit/polishing wheel.

I now have a saw feed, drive.google.com/open?id=0B0gO2dw2ik27Qk42bGpidFpkeEkI think I may make it roll on 6 bearings then have 4 in the middle as a guide, then make it so I can switch between the current clamp and a bigger bolt down clamp. Then the shaft would give 8.5" of room to cut over 5.5" of the other shaft, but I would need to draw some new plans to see if I would have the extra amount of aluminum sheet. Edit: I think I will go with the newer arbor I have, I'm guessing 8.5" of extra space would be over doing it by a bit.

A cold came up, so the goal to get the saw done this weekend is gone, but here is a picture of were I am at so far, drive.google.com/open?id=0B0gO2dw2ik27WXY5MFl5eTBPbG8. The lid ended up not fitting as well as planned, so I think forming some caulking should fill the gaps.

Wow, its been an issue of the journey was just as important as the destination. I hope you don't regret building it out of wood -- on the positive side, if you decide that you want it in steel, the wood is a pattern and all hardware will transfer over. Just suspect of how the wood will hold up to "years" and yes we want you to use it for years of use. Congratulations on the progress. Tom

An old slab saw that my grandma and grandpa have was made of plywood and painted inside and out and the box still held up well, so this one should last a bit longer lined with aluminum lol.

drive.google.com/open?id=0B0gO2dw2ik27UjFmdFdQQXdyMlkShould be just a few more days until it is all completed. Just need to finish getting the feed into perfect position, hook up a weight to one end of the feed and an auto off switch to the other, make a spot for the motor on top of the lid, stabilize the stand a little more, aaand fill any possible gaps between the lid, middle, and pan parts.

Wow, what a pleasure it will be to see it work and roll off those slabs. Let us know if you need rocks to feed it. Tom

I currently have a box and some small tubs of rocks waiting to get cut, guessing that should last a while lol

Is this the kit that was on sale on Ebay a while back ? Nope, this is mainly made of 1/4" thick aluminum angle, bolts made of threaded rods and nuts added with perm and removable threadlock, then a modified old homemade slab saw feed.

jf23 Do you need to pump coolant to the blade ? My 14 " saw delivers ample mineral oil to the blade by slinging out of the 3 gal. sump. Great project you have going, there looks really good !
