April Cabs My work has been keeping me on the road quite a lot lately. I travel now 3 out 4 weeks and haven't had much time to visit RTH. When I am home I have been sneaking in cabs between household projects and family time. These are a few of the cabs from past month or so. Amazonite 1 - this one has a silver shimmer that is very cool. Amazonite 2 Lepidolite - this is always fun to cab. Mexican Lace 1 Mexican Lace 2 - this one has a pretty pink hue Green Tourmaline in Quartz Spencer Opal - this actually has more color than it looks like. I can't seem to photograph opal very well =\ Rhodonite Paul Bunyan Agate 1 - love the deep maroon plumes Paul Bunyan Agate 2 Wingate Pass Agate - I really like how this undercuts Fairburn Agate - I dropped a large fairburn and it shattered. This is from the largest piece that sheered off when it hit the floor. Mushroom Rhyolite I had some nice Morrisonite that started working with. The slabs were thin, 3.5mm, and made for some tricky grinds. These all ended up between 3mm to 3.3mm when finished. Morrisonite 1 Morrisonite 2 Morrisonite 3 Morrisonite 4 Morrisonite 5 Morrisonite 6 Morrisonite 7 Morrisonite 8 I hope to get a bit more active here in the next few weeks. I think work should start slowing down soon..(fingers crossed..I hate traveling for work) Roger

Wonderful cabs, Roger. My fave is your Spencer opal cab - woah!! Did you have to treat it before cabbing it? Did you buy a new cabbing unit??

Good heavens!!! I suppose I can forgive you for no OJ with so many beautiful cabs to make up for it. Hard to pick a fav- they are all crowd pleasers. But, I really like the second Russian Amazonite, the Spencer opal, the rhodonite.... and a bunch more! LOL! Love the shapes!

Wonderful cabs, Roger. My fave is your Spencer opal cab - woah!! Did you have to treat it before cabbing it? Did you buy a new cabbing unit?? I have honestly never even attempted to treat or stabilize a stone. I am not sure what the process would be. Everything i have ever done is with the stone from its natural condition. I admit that I have had a lot of material come apart on me though. I know treating slabs is a very common practice and the roots of it go back a long way. It just feels a bit like cheating to me. I know it is probably stupid but, half the enjoyment i get from making a cab is the challenge of increasing my skill working with fragile material. On the cab machine, I designed my own and i am getting bids on having it manufactured. If i move forward i will post some of the cad drawings i made. Roger

Thanks, Roger, and looking forward to seeing your cad design for your machine. I'm a purist, too, when it comes to cabbing materials and purchasing some gemstones, Roger. I have not resin-treated any of the materials I've cabbed either, although I think some of the materials needed to be treated. I believe that sellers should disclose treatment if they sell gems and cabs (slabs, too) that have been treated in any way (heat, dye, resin, oiled, etc...) and how the materials should be cared for if treated. I'm the same way about specimens, too. I want to know if the specimen has been repaired or not. I love opals and have a couple of Spencer opal triplets. It is usually thin and I was very impressed at your beautiful Spencer opal cab, especially that it is au-natural.
