Hi, My daughter and I went to a street fair today and one of the jewelry vendors was letting kids pick free pendents out of a bin. My daughter picked the below stone and asked me to see if I could find out what it is. Any ideas? Side A ( full size) Side B ( full size) Thanks for any advice or ideas. Paul

Might be some type of pet wood.

Thanks. That was exactly what I thought when I first saw it. It's not very polished so we were thinking about removing the wire and finishing it off but I wasn't sure if could polish up more since I wasn't sure what it was.

Could be a rhyolite of some sort too. Rhyolite sometimes is difficult too polish beyond a satin finish...Mel

If those spots are really round orbs like they appear in the photo, I'd go with a rhyolite. Even with a satin finish its an attractive piece. It has the brown tones of much petrified wood, but it would have to be in the hand to be sure. Enjoy. Tom

Thanks Tom. I looked at some pictures of tumbled rhyolite and there are some similarities for sure. You said "it would have to be in the had to be sure". What sort of things would you be checking? Weight? Hardness? Sorry if that's a stupid question but the few times I've held petrified would in the recent past I wasn't paying much attention to anything but the aesthetics.

Rhyolite often appears somewhat crystalline porous under a 15X glass and the spheroids often have radiating lines under magnification too.....Mel

Thanks Mel. I don't have a 15x glass but I do have a desktop magnifier (7.5x I think) and I don't see anything that looks crystalline and there don't appear to be any radiating lines. We did remove the wire and took a picture of the end. I'm not sure if that really helps but it looks "woody": End ( full size) We need to order some magnifiers I think.

Is it hard? Can you scratch it with a knife blade? Somehow it looks to be softer than most agatized pet wood, and more like some opalized wood or welded volcanic material. Some rhyolites are soft and some harder than Hades. Tom

I did try to scratch it with my nail and couldn't. I'll try some more tests tonight and report back. I should have thought of doing that in advance.

Ok, I wasn't able to scratch it with a knife or a steel nail but I was able to create a small scratch with a piece of clear quartz crystal but I had to press pretty hard. Does that help narrow it down? Any other tests I can do?
