Just finished a couple batches of locally collected pet wood in the UV-10. 4 days with 220 SiC, 1 day 500 AO, 3 days AO polish. Approx 40% filler, consisting of hammer broken flint, rough tumbled for 7 days to break the sharp edges. I like the way that the vibe preserves the natural shape of the stone. Might be a while before I can collect more of these guys, the water level at the river is covering the gravel beds now. Any ideas on the wood species? 2 Batches Some close ups This one was a little softer in places I like the jet black one. In the right light, it has just a hint of wood grain. Some nice grain patterns One of my favorites. Any idea of the species? the grain/bark is remarkable well preserved Close ups An interesting piece of flint. Maybe a shell imprint?

that's a handsome looking batch of petwood. something about the colors and textures of petwood always make me think its a masculine looking stone. Nice job on the tumble

Those all deserve a WOWWWZERS! Of course I am very partial to pet-wood, as it is probably my favorite stone that I can collect and not have to buy from some source.

Good tumble on nicely varied wood. It would be helpful in providing a possible I.D. on the wood if the location of the find was known.

Good tumble on nicely varied wood. It would be helpful in providing a possible I.D. on the wood if the location of the find was known. These were all found along the Missouri river in central North Dakota. Some may have been washed down from the Yellowstone river as I've found Montana agates in the area as well.

Love it. Where is locally collected? North Dakota, along the Missouri River. I do most of my hounding between Bismark and Lake Sacajawea.

Good job tumbling, but also a superb choice of material to start with. We know not all Pet Wood is that varied and colorful. The black and white contrasts are particularly attractive (are they shrink wood)? The last one of the pet woods (your fav - strikes me as palm and is quite unique with that much detail in such contrasting colors. The concentric rings in the flint may be a shell imprint, but I've seen a lot of similar patterns in flint from Texas that I could not attribute to fossil origins (i.e. something like the rings formed in agates). Thanks for the post. Tom

Thanks for the post. Tom What is shrink wood exactly? After looking at lots of pictures of palm wood, I'm not convinced that that is what it is. The grain seems tighter and it doesn't have any dots on the end grain. I should have included something for a scale reference, but the whole piece of wood is about 4"x2"1". The close ups make the grain look much larger than it really is. I wonder if maybe it's a variety of oak or maybe sycamore? Certainly seems to resemble quarter sawn sycamore, but that's not quite right either. Quarter sawn sycamore

Beautiful batch! I'm going to take a stab at that mystery species. When I first saw it I immediately thought of oak could be tiger oak. The grain ressembles an antique dresser I have made from tiger oak.

Thanks!
