Thanks for the additional pictures, Bob. That's very red. I cut some like your first picture and it made a mess of my saw too.

This is not a good photo but I had a sphere made from some estate material in 1990 or so: It's about 2 inches in diameter. The rest of the material I sold after I realized that I got very, very tired of dealing with the red blood that poured out of it whenever I cabbed. I was just cabbing in those days, hadn't really worked up to tumbling.

Jaspilite. Kingsley North sells it. It comes from Michigan. www.kingsleynorth.com/skshop/product.php?id=98667&catID=1137From their description: "Consists of alternating layers of Magnetite, Hematite, and layers of quartz, layers of dark gray and red colorations throughout. High Iron content that makes it magnetic." Heres a pair of 5/8" (16mm) plugs I made for someone local: http://instagram.com/p/4PtFZviYZY Where it was solid it was really hard. It did bleed all over my saw and wheels. Where it was soft....it was really soft. Didn't necessarily crumble like a usual undercut but it bled like crazy(just on certain areas).

Kingsley North says there is quartz in it? Maybe they should rename it quartzilite...

snowmom, not sure, but I think this layered jasper (jaspelite?) from your state may have hematite in it. It's a big one and Mr. Daryl Blair and his wife were very sweet and sent it to me a couple of years ago to add to our rock garden. Michigan layered jasper A slab of Kuruman Hills Sunset jasper from the Northern Cape Province of South Africa

You ever heard of banded iron that far south before Mel? Did the Pebble Pups find it down in your area?
Never would have expected that.
