Howdy...
Got a rock in the mail today and it has what looks like glue dripped down one side. Don't know for sure that it's glue, but that's my best guess.
Any tried and true glue removal methods? Don't want to go too extreme and damage the rock. If that's even possible.
Figure I'll start with very hot water and go from there. Just thought it was worth asking if anyone had been there done that.
Thanks!

Alrighty... boiling water did not work. Let it sit in the boiling water and used a stiff bristle scrub brush.
No joy.
next?

Lacquer thinner is amazing stuff for many things.

Just tried acetone - didn't work either.
Time to go dig around in the garage and see what else I have.
Found mineral spirits - off to Google...

Explosives ? C-4 removes all sorts of stuff.
If it's epoxy or an epoxy type glue, soaking in acetone may take several hours. Try heating a sewing needle & sticking it in the adhesive. If epoxy based, you should be able to smell it.

When I attach my cabs to my wine stoppers I use 2 part epoxy. I had one get glued crooked and had to soak it in acetone for over a week to break the bond. Trick was not letting the acetone evaporate for a week.

Maybe direct heat will burn it off? I have no idea what type of rock you have, but a butane torch may be able to burn it off if it is something like a resin or lacquer? Obviously, I'd be careful if the rock is delicate or you think it could crack...
No real knowledge here, just a "maybe" type idea.

If solvents don't remove the glue you might grind or sand it if the rock is not damaged.

Don't have a clue. White vinegar removes some things.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. Haven't got it yet. It's on rough stone, so no sanding it off. Will try other approaches tomorrow when it's light out.

Very ccareful work with optivisors & dental picks will probably do the job if your rock isn't too delicate. Dental picks & surgical blades are your friends for all kinds of delicate work. Also the kind of files used for wax carving. They don't clog up like regular needle files will.

You might try soaking in WD-40, place in small plastic bag and spray liberally, let stand overnight sealed so it does not evaporate. That stuff has some scary solvents in it.

How would putting it in the fridge while in acetone? Would the acetone still evaporate?? You might get away with that at your house, but having all the food in the fridge absorb the acetone smell isn't something I want to consider the consequences of around here. Been a busy weekend and haven't gotten back to this yet. Will see what I can do this coming week.
