I know I'm late to the party Chuck but wanted to toss in my two cents. I run strictly Nova wheels through 50K and have never once used pad or paste or any other polishing means other than the Nova wheels. As a result I probably spend more time on the polishing wheels (above 3000) and my actual production is quite low. I go back and forth on the wheels a lot. I started off using (six) 8" wheels but lately I've been converting to 6" as the eights wear out. My current setup is seven wheels - on the left I've got 6" Nova wheels (140, 280, 600, 1200) and on the right I've got 8" wheels (3000, 14k, 50k). The weight balances out and it's a well-built homemade machine and it runs true and good and doesn't wobble. I plan on eventually converting the remaining eights to sixes and adding the 8000. There are many times when I wish I had a step between 3000 and 14k. Thanks for adding that Tommy. That is an awesome array of wheels. When I went from six wheels to eight even that slowed down my cabbing time noticeably. sounds like you have about 11 wheels so I can imagine how time consuming that is. It shows in your cabs though so its well worth it Chuck

Yeah, I'm thinking like Chuck, Tommy- it may take awhile to get through those wheels, but there is no denying the quality of the end result!!! I've got 7 - or 9, if I choose. Some days, I can really breeze through them. Others days it seems every cab is a problem child. You know what I would really like? A 50, 000 Nova spin on wheel that is already broken in. Like tntmom says those hi number spin on Novas take forever to break in. I still haven't broken in my 50k. So, Chuck, if you get the spin ons, be careful with the breaking in. Also... my gene came with some snap on adapters which you snap onto the bubblers to put them at an angle to the vertical wheel. I don't use them. I slide my tray as far to the right as it will go, place the bubblers just to the inside of the tray and under the wheel. I hold them there with my hand and periodically lift the stone back from the wheel to capture some additional water when needed. I haven't had any problems with it. Another thing. If you use wax and lose a stone while on the outside wheel- it can be dangerous. Just sayin'. Which brings up another thought... don't you use your own drip system? I wonder what you will have to do for the spin ons then?

I also thought about getting a second three wheel setup for the right side since that goes on and off really easy on the genie. I like tommy's setup though by having all wheels ready at all times so it is really easy to go back a step or two and never change any wheels/discs. Chuck

Chuck Yeah, if you have the room, which you seem to, then an extension would be great. I opt for size convenience. I don't have a lot of room for things.

I was talking about leaving the genie as is with the last wheel on the right ending at 3000 then removing the last three wheels on their sleeve and installing another 3 wheel sleeve with 8000, 14000 and 50000 mounted on it. No extra room and that right side swaps out very easily. Does that make sense? Chuck

Yeah, that was what I was thinking, bu I thought you left it on. I didn't know it was that easy! Maybe I will consider that, too.

Yeah, that was what I was thinking, bu I thought you left it on. I didn't know it was that easy! Maybe I will consider that, too. On mine I just hold the left side wheels still with one hand and spin off the right side by hand and all three come off on the adaptor. Very easy. not sure why I didnt think of that before. Chuck

The two wheels I skip the most are 1200 and 50k. The 1200 because I tend to spend a lot of time at 600 and 3000 and I skip the 50K because it scares the crap out of me haha. I can't tell you how many stones I've burned on that wheel. Two years old and it's not even close to being broken in.

I've found the trick to using the 50K without burning the stone is a LOT of water haha ... and I do mean a LOTTTTT of water. If I don't feel like I'm taking a shower then it's not enough water. Even with the water I try to keep a very light touch with it and avoid working the same spot in the stone too much at a time - or with the same motion pattern. That light touch is probably why the wheel is not broken in two years later.

I go from 3000 to 8000 then I use 50,000 grit diamond paste on a muslin buff. Works great on everything.
