Nice pictures! Thanks Chuck. How times have changed. Peak rush hour northbound on Friday used to be about 7 pm. And then there is deer season, wow.

panamark - I have been making that 350 mile drive for over 20 years so I have learned my lesson on when to leave. You wont catch me in that Friday after work traffic or the early Sunday southbound stuff either. At six o'clock on Sunday evening my boy was still swimming in the U.P. and 12 hours later I was sitting at my desk at work. We have it figured out pretty good now. Chuck

Not sure what the limits are for what you can take off state land but someone would certainly notice that one missing. Its very well known. I question myself even going through all the work to bring home the 100 pounders because they just end up as landscaping. Finding good stuff that fits my saw is the real challenge. Chuck

Wow, that's a nice bunch of rocks, Chuck! I was able to find a couple Petoskey stones at the state park, but not many. With the sand and the people, it's probably the worst place to go for rocks. It looks like a really nice place for swimming though!

It looks like a really nice place for swimming though! It all worked out good. We had a great beach day and still got plenty of rocks later in the trip. I can buy Petoskey stones online but can't buy beach time with my kid there I was hoping those pics with the quads would show how hard it is to look for stones on the ground in that area. You can only see about 4 ft around where you are walking. Luckily I had Andrew along to find them all for me. The one he found while you were there ended up being a huge boulder that would not budge with the 5 foot pry bar even after digging around it. We can just visit that one each time we hunt there. Andrew sure is better at spotting them than I was. I find them much easier to see in the water. If they have good red jasper, they really jump out at me. I'm probably going to go back to the beach tomorrow morning very early if it's not windy.

I'm probably going to go back to the beach tomorrow morning very early if it's not windy. Andrew is awesome at finding them. He probably finds three to each one I find. All of my kids have been looking for them since they were able to walk tough. My daughter hates the rock hobby but has still always picked them up during our walks because that is just what your taught to do when going for a walk on the Island. I really do not think many people realize how hard it is to find and collect these stones in good quality and in any sort of quantity. Each one we get is harder then the last. We have to keep going to harder places that the average person would not bother trying to collect them from. I am a different breed though. I enjoy the challenge and the harder it is to get the more I want it. I think my kids get a kick out of watching my determination to bring their finds home. Chuck

What is this, an ATV for ants?? I didn't know they made kid-sized ones! That one is a 90cc (35-40 mph) but it will go anywhere the big one goes and because it is narrow it often goes where mine cant go. My boys both started on that one at 5 yrs old. My youngest has outgrown it so this is the last year it. He will step up to a something like a 250 to 400 next summer. Of course at ten years old he prefers to ride my new one. Chuck

Thanks for the trip report. I will be up on the west side this coming week. I cannot wait. Let me know if you will be going up to Petoskey again. I agree, the state park is NOT the place to go. However, there are some really nice spots with plenty of petoskey stones. We found one rocky stretch of beach and collected 10 to 15 stones just sitting on a log and not moving. Let me know, and I can provide the location.
FYI, headed up to Lakeport SP again on Saturday. About a dozen petoskey stones between me and my daughter. Only one small pudding stone. We had much better luck with fossils over in Arkona. One day I will get around to doing a trip report with pics.

Thanks- Finding Petoskeys was not our real goal it was just a nice hot beach day and that park is great for that. I may take you up on your other locations some day though. I have never actually went out of my way to look for Petoskeys yet. Fort Gratiot and Lakeport are possibilities for us this weekend too if the weather stays good. Those are less then an hour away so no real planning involved. Chuck

OK. Let me know. Funny thing is that finding Petoskey stones was not our main goal. We were on a bike ride and decided to rest on the beach. Next thing you know we have a backpack full of rocks.
This was our second weekend in a row at Lakeport. First time that we've ever been there. Really nice (but crowded). We tend to gravitate towards the northern end of the beach away from the sunbathers. The kids (5 and 10) really have a blast especially with the rocks. It is much easier for my son on Lake Huron (as compared to Lake Michigan) because of the smaller waves.
