I'm thinking some form of chert, as well. Largely because of the polish it took, but also because Missouri is chert central!
As Rockpickerforever points out, chert can be heavily banded, and can be quite colorful, as well.

If anyone is still interested in this post I think I have found the answer. After hunting there again this year and finding many more of these, I did some further searching. I think that they are stromatolites. There is a ton of information on them on the web. They have tiny fossilized organisms in them, especially in the middle. I have a set of Mohs picks and they are indeed between a seven and an eight hardness. They eat up silicon carbide grit while tumbling but come out beautifully when finished. I start them in #36.
