A doubleheader today. What the heck could these two possibly have in common? Well without the first you may have never heard of the second. Most everyone has heard of Black Sabbath and their guitarist/founder Tony Iommi. Many even know that he nearly gave up guitar playing after losing fingertips on his left hand in an industrial accident on his last day of work at that job. What many people do not know is as he was about to give up playing the manager of the factory where he worked brought him an EP to listen to. This EP was by Django Reinhardt, a tremendous jazz guitarist who had suffered a serious injury to his hand as well. Even though he only had full use of two fingers on his fretting hand (he could use his ring/pinky fingers for some chord work) he is still regarded by many as one of the greatest guitarists of all time. After listening to Django and being told of his injury Tony was inspired to persevere, thus changing the course of rock 'n' roll music forever.

Great bit of information there - I grew up on Black Sabbath and never knew that about Tony. "Django" reminded me of a song that's been stuck in my head lately. It's from the Django Unchained sound track so it's not new but I keep hearing it on my "Black Keys" radio station on Pandora. And because I'm so excited that The Black Keys are back together and touring...

Chet Baker was an incredible trumpet player whose career was continually derailed due to his drug use which ultimately led to his demise. So sad to see someone with such a gift not be able to take full advantage of it. Unfortunately it is not a unique position. Bless any of you going through this with a loved one. A coworker of mine is going through this with his son and it is tearing him up, so heartbreaking.
