I am not wanting to get back into metal work so I am trying to figure out an assortment of different stones that match the opal so I can use them to make "combocabs" or something like that. I want to make one out of black stone so I can make a piece of the night sky with an opal moon and some tiny opal stars but decided that any other use of black was not the best choice. So I paired up some other cabs (unfinished) and took photos of them to see how they looked. I would appreciate comments good or bad so I can get some idea of what will work with the opal. This is one area that I am not so good at so thanks for any help. 1. I like the white agate but have a limited supply. (one haha) 2. Not so sure about this because I think a small opal will be lost on it. 3. I only have two small pieces of this type of thulite but I kind of like the combo. 4. Pink and white (ice cream opal I think) that I got from Tony in Q. I have more than enough of this stone. 5. Sodalite that I am not sure about. 6. I love this Turkish purple jadeite that I got from Scott and I am thinking three small opals down one side would be good. 7. Angelite I got from John (jsgems) at Q. I am in favor of this combo but "what do I know". 8. This is the black that I want to do the moon and stars on. 9. This is one of my two favorite jades. This is Feather River jade that Tommy sent to me. A piece of crazieness that has come to my attention during this batch of work. I can be introduced to someone and two minutes later I have forgotten their name but I can tell you who gave me which rock three years ago. I am stumped on that one. Thanks for looking and any input. Jim

Wow Jan, gingerkid thanks, beautiful work and stones but I think they are way past my patience and skill. I was thinking about gluing them to the front of the cab. lol Maybe a little more than that but not much. I am having a lot of trouble staying focused on the stones lately and am very sporadic. Hopefully the carving I just stated will pull me back but ......... Jim

I love the idea of the black as night sky! I think your perceptions are right on about the blue angelite, too... beautiful Opals...

The thulite really did it for me. Pink and green go real well together. My second choice would be the black.

@wampidy, I like your ideas and snowmom and rockjunquie's suggestions, too. I do not believe that intarsia is above your skill level!!
