That is good news to hear that she is in good spirits and her fever broke, spiritstone!! I wonder if she received it from the possible insect bite and then getting into the water? Is it salt, brackish, or fresh water that Heather got into when she and her friends were camping? Thank you for providing a link with information, and I will continue to pray for Heather, and for your family.

She is smiling and doing better. The bacteria seems to have slowed in growth and the pain is under control more or less. Still pumping in the antibiotics by IV and tomorrow is another day I hope is a good one, wait and see what happens. Thanks again for the extra support. maybe if she lets me I can show you some pics later in the days to come? lol.

As someone who (briefly) studied infectious disease, I understand just a glimpse of how terrifying and swift NF can be. I am so glad that Heather made it past the most difficult part. Wishing her a speedy recovery.
You may never know what exactly caused it. Necrotizing fasciitis, as far as I know, is just the worst possible result of some really nasty strains of relatively common bacteria entering any open break in the skin.

Cant say were out of the woods yet, but i do see the forests edge off in the distance. Last night the fever came back on, which we dont want to happen. Tells us the antibiotics may not be working. Its back down again this morning but time for more dead tissue removal today. Update you when we here more info later today.

Spider ? Spiders difficult to diagnose. Dead tissue isolated to one area w/spider bite, maybe up vein route. Sounds like the bacteria thing. So sorry to hear.

Things seem to be on the mend. Its under control and they gave us a name of the superbug? I cant remember the name at this moment, it'll come back to me and I'll post it later. The name should tell us if it was waterborne or other, except it is a less aggressive strain, whew! It got into the muscle after they did todays surgery they noticed, but going back in again tomorrow for more patch work. Heather or us both have not had a look at the open wound on the back of her calf. The only time they expose it is when she is under in surgery, then wrap it back up. I was able to see how swollen and red the knee down to the foot was and with some of it that started to spread into her ankle but never broke skin just turned a little black. The surgeons are consulting again if they really need to remove the leg, but its sounding promising they dont have to,"good news" but are expecting at least a year for recovery. I guess thats it for another day. Thanks. So bug it is and spider not.

That is good news that they figured out what it is and can hopefully treat it. Long recovery time, but it sure beats the alternatives. Be strong Heather and keep fighting.

I'm so sorry for you all. It is such a hard thing to face especially for someone so young. But, remember and never let go of the fact that it is far better to lose a leg than your life and she easily could have. Easy to say, though, right?
You've been through so much. God be with you and Heather and your family. I will pray for strength.

So so sorry spirit. So often the rich/gifted/famous people are the most miserable on earth. Often those with afflictions can be the happiest. It will work out.

Oh dear... prayers doubled up for Heather and your entire family. Tragic for your young lady to have to endure such. Any chance a second opinion may bring other options? Wishing all involved the strength that will be necessary. Hang in there Spirit.

Yep, one crazy week. Trying to take it all in so fast is hard on the head. Your all correct, I have to look at the bright side of the situation and remember it could of turned out worse. There is no reason she cant lead a productive life and this shouldnt make her think its some kind of disadvantage when in reality, this has really no meaning on what she can still achieve. Positive thinking is the way to get through it all and time heals most wounds, its out of my hands except to support her and let her know we are always there for her during the hard times she may find in the days ahead. Thanks

spiritstone, I am so sorry to hear that the doctors have made the decision to amputate, and I hope and pray that Heather will stay strong and keep her spirits up. Have you and your family been allowed to go into her room so you may speak to her? Has her fever subsided?

spiritstone, I am so sorry to hear that the doctors have made the decision to amputate, and I hope and pray that Heather will stay strong and keep her spirits up. Have you and your family been allowed to go into her room so you may speak to her? Has her fever subsided? They have allowed 3 of us to enter the room as of tues, but only in gown, gloves, hat, mask and booties. That helps a lot. We have her daughter - grand daughter staying with us, but they wont allow a child into ICU. She misses her mom and hasnt seen her for a week, but loves staying with grandpa and grandma. so its making it a little easier on Heather and the little one to. Her dad has to work to keep the bills paid so its a big help to him also. Fever has subsided but that darn bug hasnt. Done enough damage so this is probably the best way to stop it. Thanks Jan.
