I got a chunk of this of a guy who said it was montmorite. Never heard of it but thought at the time, ooh blue. So I finally got around to taking a couple slabs off and going hmmmm... I decided to look it up on the internets and no images looking like this with the name montmorite. So anyways. Not sure how to go about this. Thinking using optcon or something like that to fill the holes. Never done that before. It's cool looking material.

You didnt mention anything about the hardness and I am sure its probably not slag glass but I have had slag glass that looked very similar to that and even had the white crust areas. Your photo of the rough looks like it may be shiny in areas? hopefully yours is something more exotic. Slag glass comes in every shade of blue here in Michigan. I dug up a photo of the last I worked on. Chuck

Maybe he meant Montmorillonite. Based on your hardness that is not it. I would go with this is a chunk of dumorturite with good "desert lapis" coloring.

dumorturite - cool, I'll buy that. You can see the pleochroism as the light bounces off it, different colors seem to show up in a fine grain

So I cabbed a tiny bit of this to get a feel for it. Wow. What a mess. This rock has some potential but geez all the holes in it. So I'm thinking, shape it rough then dip it in some clear resin and once it's cured do the final 3 wheels? Never worked with epoxy on my rocks...
