In looking for a motor for a homebrew tumbler I saw that all motors are not created equal. This article briefly, but for a brief article does well in explaining the differences in the types of single phase motors of which we would most likely encounter in our homebrew projects. I've dealt with electricity at a basic level all my life...built ham radios, ran 220v lines for electric stoves, etc., but I've seldom, if ever, worked with electric motors other than plugging them up, so I thought the article was fairly informative in helping me sort through motors. Single-phase Electric Motors: Characteristics & ApplicationsWho knows...this may already have been posted, might even be in a sticky that I overlooked! Sorry if I'm repeating old news.

Thanks, I had to read it several x to fully benefit; and indeed the glossary was essential too. Part of my hobby time is resurrecting old motors from oblivion, just as I feel compelled to do for rocks. Motors are less plentiful, but some them take some time to understand and master. I have a lunker of 1 hp magnetic induction motor (Sears vintage) that I thought might be unusual, but the name may just be old terminology for the standard induction motor. I know when it dies (if and when) it will make a great boat anchor. tom

It helped me to rule out the motors I didn't want to search out, explained why some horsepowers were limited to certain types, etc.,. Naturally, once I get my tumbler going I will most likely forget most of what I've (temporarily?) learned, but hopefully I'll have a base memory to fall back on if problems arise. That 1hp does indeed sound like it will make a nice boat anchor one day. I'm an on-again/off-again ham radio guy...my boat anchors have circuits and tubes in them...I just need to get another boat now.
