To me, it looks more like a banded chert of some sort. That material is pretty common all through that region. It looks well agatized and I'd tumble it if it were me as even if it is a fossil, it's already seen eons of natural tumbling. Putting a little shine to it would not hurt it....Mel

Thanks for the input. I'm now thinking of slicing it a few times first, and making chunks that can end up being wire-wrapped. I'll keep you posted. :-)

I hunt fossils in eastern Montana (doesn't look like a fossil)and that looks more like a granite rock...Tumble it...

I hunt fossils in eastern Montana (doesn't look like a fossil)and that looks more like a granite rock...Tumble it... Interesting take. I think if you had a chance to examine it in person, you might see the layers really do look like it could be a stromatolite. I did find other fossils, mostly wood, of course, but also corral, attesting that some of this stuff came from an ancient sea bed. I may take it to a fossil expert locally to solicit her thoughts. (If she says granite, I promise to confess! )
