Thanks Jim, I can't find any examples of an onyx with needles like this. Do you have a link to a photo?

Thanks Jim, I can't find any examples of an onyx with needles like this. Do you have a link to a photo? I have never looked. This stuff can be found in various places around Southern Nevada. I have some red from out by Sloan and just got some large chunks from up near Ely. I know the gem club collects a lot of this up by Mercury. They call it an onyx, although it would not be a true onyx (chalcedony) but more like Mexican onyx, which is actually a calcite.

@roger please add some data to your query.
Will a pocket knife scratch any of these materials?
If u have access, does pool acid react with them?

Depending on weight, the first example could be acicular aragonite ( cacite) or barite. Barite is much heavier. When agatized these do make what we call sagenite....Mel

I did a MOHS test and it is a solid 2. It doesn't have any fluorescence.
The last rock fluoreses like crazy. Every part of it glows. The colors are a deep maroon, purple, green, orange, red, and yellow. It is pretty damn cool. MOHS varies across it from 2 to 5. I need to get a picture of it.
I showed it to a friend who said he wasn't sure what it is, but it looked like something he had seen from a uranium mine?
