My experiments yesterday and today with Australian Noreena Jasper - principally cutting an 8.9mm slab, trimming off some not so attractive lengths just to play with and see what I can do with it before I get to the good stuff: shaping (& hand-held-facetting) and polishing. I found it really difficult to get a good shine on these, but I have a piece of bought in cab so I know how it can end up if it is done right. Hope to have got somewhere near... First, cutting the 8.9mm slab: Cab 3 - 23 x 10.7 x 4.1mm Comments, crit and especially positive feedback (i.e how to improve) welcomed

Looks to me like you got a real good polish!! Even the best Noreena doesn't polish to an agate shine.
I like the third one a lot. The capture is great! I love the faceting, too.

Thanks rockjunquie, that's good to know. I've been back over and over again, polishing these. Then, when I say 'no more', I've still been back ... twice! I have a bought in noreena that has a good polish on, which I've been trying to emulate, but not quite there yet, but more than enough time spent.

If you had a noreena with a really killer polish it could have been treated. There is a product that people use for tile that you can soak a porous rock in to give it a better polish.

I like that, thinking outside the box..... Just seeing how it works and what I can do with it before I get to the good stuff. Facetting is principally used to let in light, which isn't going to happen with an opaque matter, but I like how they can give a flash of light, when polished, which draws the eye to the stone.
