Medium:
1 cup volume #30 SiC 1 cup volume Johnny Cat clay litter(cheapest version)
Water to fill an inch below top stones.
UPDATE:
20 minutes in the clanking is much less sharp. Not the "sliding" sound Jim describes, but definitely cushioned already.

What's that glowing yellow rock near the bottom- looks like it needs a Geiger counter.

If its still there, its a rock... Lol It is quite bright in person too. Not same color as bumblebee either. It does seem to be fluorescing in the sunlight. Overexposed when the rest of the pic is good.

Very cool. You built that? What the capacity? -Chaz Its an MJR hunk of crap, I bought on ebay. It will wear itself out in a year, I think. Uses bushings not bearings. The first drive belt wore out in 6 months. Why? Cuz it rubs on the safety shield. Im running no safety! The barrel I made. 6" PVC parts bought at homedepot.com and shipped to the store. No freight charge! <$40 for the parts. I did not weigh it. Maybe 15# of rock.

Scott, if that is a threaded plug you may have trouble unscrewing it. Grit can wedge in the threads and make removal difficult.
No problem, you can saw the the end off and use a 4" rubber 'Fernco' cap. I love them, use a nut driver to loosen the band clamp, fast and easy.
Rock on. Nice fast speed for doing coarse grind on Mohs 7 and agates. Looks like 50-55 RPM ?? That sucker will put the grind on them. Think about ~15-25 RPM for aluminum oxides 500-1000-5000-14,000 grades, fast can work with slurry thickener in finish steps though. i can't use red clay for finishing steps, unfortunately lots of sugar for finishing. Better to have a ~15-25 RPM frame, then thickeners not needed.
Not sure if kitty litter has silicates, my raw clay does and it messes up final finish.

I was careful no grit in threads.
I worried about that.
My 4" rubber cap didn't fit and could find one that did.
Yeah, it's fast. The clay mkes it quieter.
May need to build another barrel.

They have Fernco's for every size, cast iron, clay, metric, 5 inch. Go to Fernco or go to Ebay. Is that 4 inch sch 40 pipe ??

The grit gets in the threads from tumbling. Not so concerned about grit at assembly.

I use about 2 cups clay for that size. No telling w/kitty litter, it may thicken a lot.

But my 4" cap wouldn't go over the outside and the unit was long already. I found my old broken barrel. I'll be able to use that cap, I think.

82 is booking for 6 inch. Do use thickener at that speed on 6 inch barrel.
Scott, next time use a bushing, not a bell reducer. The shoulders on the bell wear fast. Bushings are real thick. Shoulder wear not so much an issue.
Glue in a short stub of 4 inch pipe and the rubber cap would fit it.

Example of bell reducer shoulder wear on crappy barrels I bought from Ebay years ago. These are SDR 35 thin wall drainage pipe-useless. 2 months and they wore thru. Sch 40 a horse of a different color, but even sch 40 bell reducers wear at the shoulder. So the bushing..
