Wonderful photo report on your field trip! I came in thru the south entrance of the park a couple years ago but unfortunately didn't see this ranch you report on, I picked up a few nice large specimen pieces of Rainbow Pet wood from the big store close by and it was relatively cheap. Had a great time there at the park and traveling throughout Arizona. So different from where I live in SoFla. Thanks for your efforts!

I was also at the Petrified Forest many years ago and didn't see this place. I'm seriously glad we made the effort to stop this time.

Tanya had mentioned that he passed away three weeks prior to our visit in July (She referred to him as "Grandpa" - I'm assuming this is the same individual; I don't know them personally). In the Petrified Forest's South Entrance Museum/Visitor Center they have a huge petrified stump that's been beautifully polished. The plaque indicates that it was donated by the DoBell's some years back.

Looks like a fun trip for the whole family, the best kind. If I find myself out that way, I'll definitely try to go pick up some AZ pet wood. Nice report.

We stopped here after a visit to the Petrified Forest National Park during our Summer vacation to Flagstaff. This is an awesome location1 We arrived unannounced and wandered around until we found one of the employees who got one of the family members. Tanya showed us around the Curio Museum, Grandfather Frank's old home, which is now filled with polished and rough rocks and petrified wood as well as collected items from his youth. It was pretty interesting. She then gave us the tour of the ranch and where we could collect petrified wood; which is basically anywhere on their property. Tanya was really great to meet and she collected a lot of stuff for my wife to give to her first grade class. The property backs up to the south entrance of the Petrified Forest so the material you'll collect is similar to what you saw in the park. As I had forgotten to bring any of my tools, we contented ourselves with surface collecting which yielded about 80 lbs. of materials in about 90 minutes. We had a great time! Make sure to swing by here when you visit the park. Now, on to some logistics: 1. The road is on the north side of highway 180, approximately three miles north of the southern entrance to the Petrified Forest National Park. The entrance is simple a gate/cattle guard with a hand painted red and white sign. It is easy to miss. If you are coming south on 180 from Holbrook, it will be on your left. If you reach the National Park, you've gone too far. 2. Go through the gate and make an immediate right turn so you're paralleling (more or less) Highway 180 and heading south towards the park. The road will slowly veer away from Highway 180 heading more due east. You'll go about three miles. When you come to a second gate you'll have arrived at the museum and collecting area. 3. The Curio Museum will be immediately on your right. It'll look like a house because that's what it was. Park there. If you don't see anyone immediately around, walk towards the warehouse and see if anyone is around. That's where I found the employee. 4. Bring five gallon buckets as that's how they charge. Tools are optional. There was so much lying around on the surface we didn't really need them. 5. Tanya will show you where to collect. Stay on the Dobell Ranch property as there are other claims in the area. 6. Bring water if you're there during Summer. You can drive up there with regular passenger cars. The road is a bit rough and is not maintained but isn't a problem. So, skip the rock shops in Holbrook and the gift stores at the south entrance of the Petrified Forest. They'll gouge you on pricing. Collect it here and enjoy the opportunity to find your own petrified wood. Photos: Part of the Museum: Petrified Wood: Collecting Really wanted this one … Nathaniel came to help … No dice … What we ended up hauling out: Shown wet after cleaning. Some are in the tumbler and on the vib lap now. First cut. Some of you have seen Andrew and Nathaniel "grow up" via forum pics. Andrew is now three or four inches taller than Mommy and Nathaniel is not that far behind ... They grow up so fast. Barbara also managed to get a photo of a local: Thanks for checking the thread out. I wished that PeeBucket hadn't have stolen the pictures out of greed. . Sad little tears...sniff, sniff.

coloradocliff, here's a link to Paul's paulshiroma review on Trip Advisor - Dobell Ranch Review. There's a few of his pictures in the review. If you ever get the opportunity, it's a must for any rock enthusiast and not sure how long it will remain open! I've got a Dobell post on here somewhere, although not as detailed as Paul's. Really sad what PB has done! I've got tons of pictures on here, tied to PB. As of today they're still showing up, but I'm guessing that will change soon. I'm using Flickr now. -Jeremy

You been busy lately txrockhunter Haven't seen you around. You collecting on the ranches again this fall? I seen the devastation caused by pbuckets' greed for money. Yeah never can tell how long an opportunity to collect will last. Ie Walker Ranch. The geode place in Utah etc. Could dig for years and not find as nice of material or as much as on a dig fee place. Collecting any smaller San Jacs these days? Regards, Cliff

paulshiroma I fixed the images in your post - they are now hosted on RTH. It took me about 5 minutes using the "right click-save-upload" method. We don't have to surrender our good posts to the PeeBucket!

Yes, a big THANK YOU!!! All the headache and none of the glory, lol. At least people are started to let you "do your thing" without questioning your every move.
ETA - Oh, and coloradocliff, thank you for pulling up old posts, getting them in view. Even recent ones are buried at an alarming rate!

Well, coloradocliff I got a little distracted when I upgraded from a cell phone camera to a DSLR. I've spent the last few months experimenting & learning how to get the most out of it. There's a huge learning curve, but the possibilities are seemingly endless! I started out taking pictures of rocks, but was so amazed by the difference that I started stalking every bug that came close to my back yard. It soon escalated to flowers, wildlife, and landscapes. Now, the honeymoon is over and I'm getting back to my rock pile! I've got the tumblers rolling again and I can hopefully take some really good photos to post. I'm blaming Randy Garage Rocker for the distraction......just kidding, Randy! He was extremely helpful picking out equipment, learning how to use it, & how to take & process better photos! The San Jacinto River has been a little high to hunt, but I've still got 3-4 buckets of SJ's in the garage. I am planning to make the hunt in West Texas. You thinking about heading out for it? - Jeremy

Very generous individual. I can only give some technical advice on the photography subject. Got to bring your own creativity and you, my friend, have a natural eye for it. Have enjoyed watching the show!

Just talked with the owner, Noah Dobell on email. He does answer his email AND VERY promptly. Asked for his latest news and info. Also begged for pictures. Shameless for rocks. Will get back to the forum with any and all info he provides. Cliff

Yep but have to be the right posts and not for the sake of building post numbers up. Lots of super posts and they sure do get buried quickly. Sweet sauce.

Have been talking to lots of the members about it and Craig has been kind enough to send me gps and geography on the Singleton ranch. We also have a new member in the oil field work in my area who travels and goes to different well sites., Might be something there as far as collecting well sites. Interesting for sure. If you ever get more of the Jacs I will buy or trade you something for them. More curious than anything. BTW what saw did you use to cut the Texas material you posted? Small and clean cuts. Just in awe of your pictures. Must be a doctor huh? Don't say lawyer , hehehee Just would like to see a few and have a friend in that area but haven't had tme to see her and maybe collect.

Will get back to the forum with any and all info he provides. Cliff Noah is a great guy! When I was out there, he got in the hole with me and helped dig out some really nice material. I stayed up there 'til about 9:00 that night, cutting, trading material, and listening to stories about his Dad & Grandfather. He absolutely loves rocks and will trade for just about anything! Can you send me his email? I wanted to follow up with him, but lost his address.... I think it had dirt in there, somewhere. Thanks for bringing that up, Cliff!
