ouch ... when Jean said "brown widow" I thought she was talking about males. That's a nasty looking bugger right dere haha. Ha ha. You see, I knew what I was talking about! Males of those species are pretty inconsequential, they don't get very big at all. However, I suppose if they could kill the much larger females, you'd call them "widowers" not "widows", lol.
But we all know why the females are called widows. Guess the action must be worth it, the species continues to exist!
I think in So Cal, the browns are giving the blacks (widow spiders) a run for their money. Very disconcerting when I saw the first brown one. Was actually playing with it hanging from it's thread. The pattern on the dorsal side of the abdomen (see @shotgunner 's photo) meant nothing to me. Couldn't drop it fast enough when I saw the red hourglass on the belly!

Years ago in North Dakota,I was bit by a spider,it swelled my arm up like a balloon.. Meds took it back down to normal! They didn't tell me what kind it was,for I didn't see it either, but felt the bite! Odd they can tell by the bite marks...(Or sting)

Yeah, when we lived in Ojai, the brown widows were showing up there too Spider guy I talked to said they sometimes eat back widows. They definitely compete with them well and seem to be displacing them in yards.
Starting to think the bite I thought was a scorpion sting the other day was actually a spider bite, as it lasted a whole week. Caught a spider by my Barker lounger and thought it was a recluse but it had eight eyes and leg spines so was only a look alike. I could not ID it from my books. Wonder if that was my attacker but guess it's impossible to tell. Sure did itch like a bigod while it healed....Mel

So Billy, do you have to avoid the sun and have restaurants hold the garlic ? *L*
My first car was a Simca with an all plastic interior lining. Had a girl friend get pissed at me ( common occurrence with me), slam my car door and the whole inside shattered and fell off. Guess that plastic got a bit brittle with time *L*. Dang cheap furrin cars anyway!...Mel

Scott, *L* What can I say, I've always had a thing for ornery females and I totally lack tact or good social skills. I've pissed off so many gals, yet it always seemed so unfair to me, me being such a fine fellow and all. Wimmens is strange!!!!!...mel

I just found this guy on my deck. He (or she) was nice enough to pose for some pictures. It was pretty big for spiders around here. I always thought these were wolf spiders, but it looks more like a dark fishing spider from my brief internet research.
