I finally solved my Genie water supply problem and have been turning out lots of new cabs which I'll post soon. I dug into my sugilite stash and found this unusual and very attractive (to me at least) slabette that cabbed like a dream. I was very happy with the finished stone...until I photographed it. Pow! The fracture I hadn't noticed through all the cabbing steps jumped out immediately in the image. My lazy mistake -- I usually loupe and mark all visible fractures before I start cutting. But this piece appeared so solid I didn't bother. Now, back to the trim saw and some recutting. Live and learn and learn and learn...that learning stuff never seems to stop.

That sucks! I feel for you. If it makes you feel any better, I see fractured sugilite cabs for sale all the time. I think because of the expense and rarity, people are willing to put up with some fractures in a solid stone. I don't think I'd want to do that, but I know a very big sugilite seller who does and they sell like hotcakes.
