very nice ^^^ an about the salt back in the day withalachoochee was just a deeper salt water valley, plioscene era correct, if so means megs an other prehistoric aqua fossils should be findable in same location? just recently got addicted to rocks trying to learn, would love to cab some but machine seems expensive, would a table grinder with the diamond wheels work? im not to worried about the gators, hoping these would be worth something to make it a payable hobby

Nice score! Why worry about value, especially if your putting it into your collection?? James will be along and can give you all the info you want on coral,as said,he is the coral King!! Sounds like a great area to hound, with the history of fossils and all!!!!

Hey swampcoral , value on a piece of this type of coral is tricky. Corals like yours are display items. They can't really be used for much else. Well, they could be busted up to be tumbled if it's nice coral but wouldn't make a good display specimen. Display specimens have a couple different ways to be valued. If a rock is rare, that certainly adds to it's value. And how a buyer finds the visual appeal of the specimen would be another factor. What one person believes an item is worth may be vastly different from the value that another may put on the same piece. One of those beauty is in the eye of the beholder kinda things. You may want to look on eBay at what Withlacoochee corals have sold for recently. Looking at asking prices on current listings means nothing, some folks ask really insane prices on eBay to see if anyone bites. Do an advanced search on completed listings to see what actually sold. Some of the corals I have pictured in the threads that I linked could easily bring a few to several hundred dollars each. Others may be worth 50 bucks. Just like anything else in life, it's worth what someone will pay for it. I like your piece with the "tubes". Interesting visual appeal. At a show, you might be able to put a $50 price tag on it and get it. Doubt it would bring quite that on eBay - maybe. If that piece was where you are looking, there are others! I wouldn't be surprised in the least if someone with the means to obtain nice coral specimens could bring home a pretty good pay check selling corals. There is also a market for the solid pieces of coral, which folks use for knapping into arrow heads and other artsy pieces. Also makes for fine rock tumbler food. Tumbled coral pieces can be quite beautiful. Plenty of examples posted right here on this forum!

Florida rock shows another great spot to get hollow corals. A fellow at one show is a diver. Kinda gave up selling coral after seeing his specimens and prices. He had the finest psuedoworphs ever. He dives the stretch of Withlacoochee between Georgia state line and it's confluence with the Suwannee. I have never worked that section. He was displaying with the Ruck's oyster pit fellow. Lots of oysters and lots of sawn hollow coral in 8-14 inch category. fine specimens ~$100-150.
