If I hound it and it is good enough to slab and can then I put Chryscola, Turquoise, Axurite, Malacite on the price card for the cab or wrapped pendant because usually thru all exist in the same area and you have to higrade to separate the pieces that are hopefully hard enough to wotk without stabilization. I do back almost all of my soft type stone cabs with a very thin layer of Devcon steel reinforced epoxy.

Quick test - Crysocolla will stick to your tongue. That is simply a test for porosity. Real glassy chrysocolla won't stick.

But turquoise may stick if porous or not if quality. Chrysocolla may stick if porous or not if glassy (quality). Tongue test inconclusive in any case.

Turquoise streak / swarf is white; chrysocolla is blue-thro-green. I'm sure this has been done before somewhere.

Ok here's an update on Royston. I spoke with Dave Otteson (I think Dave) at Pow Wow. He said they just closed it for now, and that I should call him around May (when he's out mining) if I want a tour. So I guess it has gone from "official tours" to "call and maybe you can get a tour". So all hope is not lost! What about chrysocola is there any readily available spots to hound in Arizona or Nevada ?

Yes, there is a great mine close to here for chrysocolla with bromargyrite (silver bromide) and a couple where I have found silicated chrysocolla. If you get out this way when the weather is nice let me know and I can take you to one of the mines.

Hey Metalsmith what do you scratch the turquoise with to do the streak test? Sorry, I missed this. Unglazed porcelain is the 'official' streak-test. Dishwashers seem to do a great job of de-glazing porcelain, so there's one opportunity. Alternatively the swarf I speak of can be observed on cutting disks or flat laps. Just run water to keep things damp and you should find a paste forming. The consistency will vary with the amount of water, but even dry, Turquoise is white and powdery; Chrysocolla is blue / green - olive.
